Orion's Arm Halo Drive Ship by Juan Ochoa

Post #1by eburacum45 » 03.05.2006, 12:39

Juan Ochoa has made a nice model of an Orion's Arm ship which uses a reactionless drive called a Halo Drive;
here is the image he produced (not a Celestia image)

We have been working to import this model into Celestia;
here is the result so far

This is quite a complex model, but once I have put a few more lights on the ship I'll send it off to the motherlode.

it's a nice model, but I prefer the more spindly look in the first picture... the big 'claws' look a bit too chunky to fit the ship to me... definitely a nice original design though!

It is the same mesh, although it does look a little different in Celestia.

The 'theory' is that the giant masses in the claws are gravitationally coupled to a halo of tiny Van den Broeck type spacewarps, which pull the ship along in real space. This is essentially a reactionless drive.

By coupling to the warp fields rather than travelling inside them, the ship avoids having to be miniaturised itself.
