Mira revisited, my work so far...

Post #1by buggs_moran » 24.12.2005, 22:16

Well, I really wanted to have something to post for the end of the year, so I am going to put a beta of Mira up on my ftp site. Beware: large textures and models, 16MB file, just unzip and put files into extras directory.

I want to thank Runar (rthorvald) for the use of his star textures. Some of the things I want to work out before final release on the motherlode...

1) No mass transfer stream between O Ceti (Mira) and VZ Ceti, but I haven't given up yet. I don't know if this is actually going to be a problem. In the last paper I read on Mira, and based on what I have read so far on Roche limits and the kind of binary Mira is, it seems that the transfer may be due soley to the solar wind, not through a gas stream. Hmm. I've started work on a CME, but wasn't satisfied so far.

2) Angular velocities on the stars and gas disks are probably waaay out of whack. However, they have kind of a nice effect right now.

3) Orbital elements not totally up to snuff. Inclination and obliquity really gave me a hard time. However, without the matter transfer stream that problem may be moot...

4) Want to write a document to add on for educational purposes. This is an actual system. I want to make it as close to reality as I can.

5) Might want to tweak the textures a bit more. Not totally satified. Absolutely despise the side view of the disk. Also want to add on some orbiting bodies. There is a supposed third component to this system, might be a nice place to pitch a tent.

6) Naming conventions are probably messed up. That will be fixed.

7) Clean up the files, give credit where due

6) Make low res pngs for low end computers. This was made to work well on my computer. Please give feedback on fps if you can.

Thanks and enjoy,
Buggs

Oh yeah, pics. The first four are closing in on VZ Ceti (MiraAB B in the program, it will be changed). The last one is a teaser pic for another add-on in VERY early stages. It is Beta Lyrae, a close ecliptic binary where the secondary is only .3 AU from the primary and is eveloped within an accretion disk..

An ok addon so far, nice choice of colours, but yeah, the textures could be tweaked with a bit more. The Beta Lyrae addon looks like it will be even better than Mira when finished.

This add-on looks quite spectacular. Would it be possible to add a little more transparency to the accretion disk? It appears to be a tad, too solid. The background stars (especially Mira) seem completely obscured.
All-in all though, quite nice looking!
Hi guys. Listen, they're telling me the uh,
generators won't take it, the ship is breaking apart and all that. Just, FYI.

Did you try it? I can tweak the transparence on the outer ring. When you fly through the inner area, you should see that it is pretty transparent...

Sorry, I should have been more specific. It is the outer ring in the fourth photo that I noticed.
I'm downloading it now.
