Revisited : Killeen's M27 nebula with Robert Gendler picture

Hi again,

I am always wondering of Rob Gendler astroimages 8O
( http://www.robgendlerastropics.com/ ).

He gave me its gracious agreement for use his picture to create new add-ons.

Here is a first test with M27 (I use Killeen's add-on for stc and ssc files and create a new mesh and texture).

Jill, now you are our nebula guru!
M27 is wonderful, as is the new RCW_79 nebula you just released. :D
Very well done, indeed!
Go one this way, please, there are a lot of beautiful nebuae waiting for you (M42, just for an example?).
Bye and thanks a lot.

It's a big challenge, M42 is more complex :?

I tried some meshes but the result wasn't as good as i expected  (especially from a side point of view)

even if some details are fun

Well, ... i'll must test other meshes ...

If you like nebula, i uploaded some others on motherlode some time ago.
(Helix, M57, NGC 3132, Eta Carinae, MZ3, He2-104)

Bye

I understand that diffused nebulae like M42 are much more difficult than the planetary ones, but I'm sure that in a close future Chris, Fridger, Toti and someone else will allow a different nebulae rendering, more realistic for nebulae like M42.
BTW, I have all your nebulae, and I love M57 and Helix. :D
Thank you.
Bye

Hello Jll,

As I see you are still working on more nebulaes, I want you to test this pseudo addon based in your last one (rcw79). The purpose was more transparent textures, and I think the result is not bad (I have placed it in an arbitrary location for the stars/MW background with some more fictitious stars for a nice effect when you go through). Note I have done some color change, this because my LCD, so don't worry about that.
Now as always, the side view is bad, bad, bad... but there is nothing to do.

Download -> Neb (2.5mo)

What do you think of it?

Nice indeed (even if I prefer more colorful nebula  )

As I'm not an astro-expert I don't know where is the truth :
does nebula texture needs to be as transparent as your test or not ?

Any advice out there ?

May be the best way will be to define mesh with numerous very transparent "layers" ?

Perhaps we would gain on various aspects :
- more gas effect
- to make the structure less visible from side view
- the colors would be obtained by addition of the various layers

On the other side :
- add-ons are heavier
- more complex to define (need to split texture into different component)

I tried this in M42 and M27 (with only 2 layers but without very transparent texture) : it's not so pretty :( ,
and with your transparent texture (from a previous post) with 3 layers (a smaller mesh inside and bigger outside the main mesh ... again I wasn't satisfied :(

Well, the world wasn't made in 1 day !

So I go on my way ...

Bye

Yep, that's it; your third point will not be easy to control but I think a serious try could be done

I don't think the size is a big problem if the work is really nice and yes, the work on the texture need some special attentions in that case...

The main problem is those nebula are a volume, so trying to create a real 3D representation will not be possible using only 2D picture. We generally only have 1 point of view, so no one can say how will look X or Y nebula from 90?° left, right, up or down... I think there is a big part of interpretation so the final product will never be really accurate; now how you will work will depend on what exactly you want to do. If you want an accurate view then IMO it won't be possible with the actual possibilities; if you want to create some nice personal interpretation based on the reals documents, then trying with the above points can result in some nice addons. In that case, I think you should try not to use the same texture on the meshes to avoid some irrealistic "double views" of this texture, and use your imagination to create the rest of the meshes...
I think the result is good when you go through the nebula and have a nice 3D effect...

If I have some time (quite hard for now), I will do more test to give you (if I can) some ideas for this hard task

Bye.

Hi all,

Some additional test about multi-layered transparent mesh around M1.
With an external one with red and yellow part and inner part with blue-grey cloud and a decreased limunosity.

Face vue seem good (except "double views" sorry ElChristou, it's late and I to tired to do additional work now  )

Side view ... :?

Inside view 8O

Well, I will add more layers, but my PC seems to be short in memory with this mesh and texture (512 Mo is not enouth )

Have a pleasant trip around beta M1 (12.5 Mo ...).
