Post #1by Scarecrow » 11.08.2005, 13:57

What are the advantages of using a CMOD over a 3DS file?

Hello,

Cmod is just the native format for Celestia models.

From my experience, the cmod is useful to "repair" some bad optimized 3DS files, and don't know why, I have the feeling the models are a bit faster to load, but I it's just a feeling...

An important point is that a Cmod file is much bigger than a 3DS, specialy if you don't do an optimization during the convertion.

Also in my case I use the Cmod format to keep the models I do within the Celestia community.

Chris designed the CMOD format to be a much better match to OpenGL than 3DS is. As a result, they produce about 1.5x the framerate on 3D graphics cards.
