You type the date and then you right click and select "Format cells"
Switching to "general" might result in Julian Epoch.

On OSX, you can also use this little utility i made: http://celestiaproject.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7337 - easier than launching Exel.
... If you are on pre-Tiger, or use Win/Linux, this thing may be used like a local web page. Else, it goes into your widgets panel.
