Nebula 3D models

Hi,

Re-visited 3D versions of old nebula models :

Eta Carinae

MyCn18

I still have some problems on nebulae orientation
Comments and/or ideas are welcome.

This is very interesting :-)

But two comments :

1- The Eta Car planar disk has an hard edge visible at the right of your first picture above. It should fade out smoothly. The texture should be edited a bit there, or the planar model should be resized.

2- The planar model is a bit crude, for my taste. We see clearly some triangles and "hard spikes" on it. Can you make it smoother, with more polygons, so it looks more natural ?

This is promising ! :-)

There's a typo in the .SSC file for MyCn18. The leading quote is missing from the Mesh declaration. It should be

Code: Select all

   Mesh "MyCn18.3ds"

Have you read http://www.lepp.cornell.edu/~seb/celestia/billboard.html#6.0?
It includes some suggestions for how to align models using background photographs from all-sky surveys. I usually use either http://www.virtualsky.org/ or NASA's SkyView at http://skys4.gsfc.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/skvadvanced.pl

With all respect, I think these images look much more like
certain species of the deep-sea fauna than like nebulae...

T00fri,

yes, but this is because of Celestia's strong limitations to render nebulae. To me, the Eta Car above appears to be a good compromise. It's looking better than the one made by Rassilon, a long time ago. It needs some tweaks, however.

The nebulae are very frustrating, in Celestia. I also tried to do some good looking nebulae for Celestia, before. It's very hard :-(

Unfortunately, although the textures are OK and much improved over Rassilon??s original addon;I think the star appearance in your model is far from good. The star appear like it was inserted in a cavity, showing only half of a hemisphere each time. The Rassilon??s model show the entire star, but your model don??t.I really would be pleased if both addons become compatible in some way.Deleting Rassilon??s model, the interior of Eta Carina become weird. But staying with both,we have a cocoon inside another and I don??t know if is it realistic...

Whether they are good or not, I'm just happy that someone finally used their imagination and made 3D nebulae.
No seriously, it's HUGE!

Hello everybody,

Thanks for all comments, I'll try to improve EtaCar and MyCn18 models.

I tried to work on the transparency of the models in order to better return the 'gaz' aspect;
Here a first returned on Helix. I'm soory t00fri, but it is still large deep-sea fauna  , but who knows absolutely which is the real form ?

I think these 3D nebula models look great so far, but yes, they could be improved a bit.

Helix Nebula is shurely the best mesh model of a nebula I've seen so far in Celestia.

I also think the the Helix rendering above is a big step forward.
