New Spacecraft for Celestia...

Post #1by ElChristou » 07.03.2005, 18:32

Hi, everybody

Here is a pre medres version of what will be one of my first release for Celestia (the final one in a few weeks).
At first this spacecraft was made to replace the (badly ) hacked Orion (for me all of 2001 is untouchable) in the educational activities (it?€™s why I called it Celestia 1 for now)?€¦
The model has a quit detailed structure for a low poly count, there is no textures for the moment. The model can be download here (1,2mg).

So all feedback is welcome.

Enjoy.
Bye.

PS: Although in progress:
(Is there a volunteer to write the ssc file for locating the landing site of the Tintin rocket and the lunar rover in the Hipparcus circus??)

ElChristou I think you want something like this

Code: Select all

"TinTin Tank" "Sol/Earth/Moon"
{
Class "spacecraft"
Mesh "tank.3ds"      #enter the name of tank model
Radius 0.003
LongLat [ 5.2 -5.1 0 ]   #centre of Hipparchus
Color [ 0 0 0 ]
RotationOffset -46.8     #longitude of Hipparchus+Moons RotationOffset-90
Orientation [ -5.1 1 0 0 ]    #Latitude of Hipparchus
Albedo 0.15
}

This puts it in the centre of Hipparchus, the orientaion will probably depend on the orientation of your model. You should be able to adjust the position
on the moon from this,Jestr

ElChristou:

I like the idea of a new model for the Celestia 1. Jack Higgins hacked the Orion model for me at my request, in order to get some spacecraft design that folks could imagine themselves in as they cruise the Celestia universe. His design actually looks pretty neat, but a new ship is always nice to see.

I like your initial design but here are some constructive comments:

1. Since the Celestia 1 will frequently travel at both sub-light speed and "warp" speed (particularly if you press the [G] key in Celestia, its design should have some kind of futuristic "warp" engines, in addition to the standard looking chemical rockets your new model has. This can be a challenge to work out, but this would be a great opportunity to design something really futuristic and unique.

2. When using Jack's Orion model, I have actually been able to go inside the model while in Celestia and actually look out the front window, where I can see the nosecone of the ship. I have even created a cel:url hyperlink that will put the user inside the ship looking out its windows. Its really fun. It looks like your front window is nice and transparent. It would be great if it remained transparent and big enough in the final design to see out of from inside the model. Also, you've got only a few small side window ports. Do you think you could either make them a bit bigger, or add a few more of them?

3. You mentioned that surface textures are not yet added. Will the model have detailed surface texture with the name of the ship, etc.?

4. My Activities actually use two ships, the Celestia 1 and Celestia 2. That way, we can fly them side by side, and take turns using them in Activities. When you finalize the new design, could you create two identical ships with just a name change on their fuselages? That would be great! :)

Thanks for tackling this. I look forward to the evolution of the new design. :D

Hello Franck

Well first about the engines, I will try to do something more futuristic as you say, but in fact the idea was to create something not so far from us (2020-2100) so it?€™s quite common it?€™s right?€¦ In fact, the craft is also supposed to enter atmospheres it?€™s why we still have wings?€¦

For the windows, I think you won?€™t have any problems cause the ship is not so small (see the dimension of the door). To get in is a good idea but need a better definition of the interior. I will work on this. The only restriction is the size of the file, I don?€™t want to pass 2mg for smaller systems. Make a try inside the cockpit and give me feedback.

I will work first on modeling, then to finalize on textures?€¦ I?€™m quite busy with the end of the Tintin scenery and a brand new shuttle, so it can take a time to have all done.

Don?€™t you prefer 2 versions for Celestia 1 and 2?? (with some changes on details)

But why don?€™t create a complete futuristic craft with a descent module. I will do some drawing to show you. (In this case, this one will end in a space cemetery?€¦ I have the idea to group all models + new ones in a specific zone of the solar system cause I remember a good illustration of this kind and it can be fun to visit such a place?€¦)

Tx for the comments,

Bye
