Tunguska 1908 / meteorites add-on package coming soon

Post #1by Medusa » 06.10.2004, 11:35

Hi folks,

I found a source for the possible orbit(s) of the body that caused the Tunguska event of 1908. Last night I adjusted it to Celestia... due to the small horizon angle, it was a lot of tweak and fizzle, the body would have missed earth if just 80 km apart from its course. Took me some hours of "gunnery practice" to hit the right coordinate. The best fit I ever made!

Nevertheless, I will not yet publish the file here. I also aquired orbit data of the Jackson Lake Bolide of 1972. If nobody did it before, there also could be done something about the Shoemaker-Levy impact on Jupiter. Including my Sikhote-Alin data, it all will result in a fine package of four major meteoroide/bolide events of the 20th century.

I'll post here if it's ready. Sure that at least Terrier will love it. Stay tuned! :)

Ridin' the fireball,

Jack Higgins has made a SL addon - but only trajectories for the first four segments. You may take a look at his site.

Also, here's a link to a recent topic on the forum regarding the SL9 impact;

Yes, I've also found some stuff about SL9 when searching the web... including an old data file for Celestia set up by Selden (contains all 21 fragments with amazing accuracy). Maybe I rework that a bit with respect to a common ancestor body (guess the data has to be simplified for that).

Good news: meanwile Jackson Lake does a hellish ride through the atmosphere (34 km above earth's surface, the sky already blue!!!) before departing. Made an ugly burned texture file for post-encounter file. :twisted:

Let me have a few days to complete it all...
