Galactic routes

Post #1by ajtribick » 20.04.2004, 19:00

A series of replacements for the asterisms.dat file showing routes through the galaxy, if your spaceship can only travel a certain distance at a time.

There are several sets of stars available, from the "habitable stars" to all stars in the dataset.

Interestingly there is a massive cluster of "habitable stars" visible in the 5-parsec-jump map, I suspect it is the Hyades, I'd like confirmation of that.

Download from my website (496K)

Bear in mind that my website is currently undergoing major updates. If the file moves I will update this thread.

Yes, it's the Hyades.

I installed your "asterisims_A_5.dat"
plus my "messier_all_v2" Addon, which includes the Messier open clusters. M46 = Hyades.

The menu brought up by a right-mouse-button mouse click on the large blob of lines is titled "Hyades".

QED.

I've just discovered my recursive algorithm used for generating the routes was incorrect.

The result is much larger files than necessary which don't connect all the required stars.

I am currently in the process of testing a new algorithm which should fix things.

Sorry. I will announce a new version in this thread at some point in the near future.

Small update - yes it did connect all the right stars, but it did it fairly inefficiently. I'm surprised my original algorithm didn't get stuck in an infinite loop.
