OK thanks for the info Paul.I seem to be having trouble changing files on these free sites.Obviously it is easier to keep to files named the same as before but it seems impossible to overwrite them on some sites.I'll try to correct it one way or another.Jestr

The topcities website now has all the new models as well-see address above,I'm not sure whats going on with the 012 webpages one -could be it maxed out during your downloads paul as the files look Ok on the site, but I get corrupted files for all of them at the moment.Jestr

Jestr,

can you make two generic models for the asteroids, as a replacement of the originals in Celestia ? They should be called asteroid.cms and roughsphere.cms, in cms format and not in 3ds format. I suggest that you take the original asteroids and just smooth the hard "edges". The original asteroids in Celestia needs more polygons, because they are very crude.

Cham:
Have you looked at the cms model format? Celestia generates the models on the fly from a simple parameter set, so I doubt if it's something Jestr can tweak with his modelling skills.
Chris is unhappy with cms and planning to replace it soon.

Unfortunately I dont have anything other than Celestia that will read and import the cms models,it seems quite an economical format though the file sizes are tiny.If you want different types of asteroid you could check out my Asteroids web page here
http://jestrstuff.0catch.com/extras/extras.html
if you download the ssc's they point to various different models with different textures, all available on this site.Cheers Jestr

Cham and Jestr,

In case it wasn't obvious from what Grant wrote, the CMS files are plain text, unlike 3DS models. You can use Notepad (or any other text editor) look at them to see what they tell Celestia to draw.

Hopefully the new Mesh definition that Chris is working on also is a textual format.

There are two versions of the format--as ASCII one for hand-tweaking, and a binary one that's more compacted and can be loaded more quickly. Currently, the ASCII format is the only one implemented. I'll be posting a description of the format soon so that people can comment on it.

Chris,

Does that imply that Celestia will be including a compiler for it?

Hopefully it's similar enough to one of the existing model description languages so that existing 3D GUI modelling programs could be used to generating the initial models.
