New Galaxies/Nebulae site

Post #1by jestr » 06.02.2004, 22:59

I have just set up another website.I hope I will be able to place quite a few of my addons,but although it promises unlimited bandwidth,there is a clause in the contract that allows them to shut it down if too much of their resources are being used-so i'll wait and see.Hope you like it.I'm still in the process of building the site so only the Galaxies bit is working so far.
Here is the link

The cat eye nebula, NGC 6543 in this web page, isn't placed at the right place. It's located about 3.6 millions of light-years from the sun, very far away from the milky way. In the info URL, it says it's at 3000 ly from the sun (inside the milky way).

What is the exact location I should paste in the ssc file ?

You are right Cham,looking at other sites it seems the consensus is about 3600ly away.Change the distance value in the Dsc file to read 3.6e3 instead of 3.6e6.Jestr

I'm unable to make the NGC 4414 nebula to show. I just get the galactic gray blob. Of course, I placed the NGC 4414 folder in my extras, and all the files are in the right position. What's wrong with this one ?

I've just downloaded the dsc,3ds,and png files and it works fine for me.Do you have a 'medres' folder inside 'textures' inside 'NGC 4414' folder.If you dont this would cause a problem?Cheers Jestr

Yes, it's exactly like this. All other nebulas are showing fine, only this one isn't showing.

You could try resizing the texture to 1024x1024.The one you have is 2048x2048,bigger than the other textures (though ngc2207 is 2048x1024)maybe your graphics card cant handle it?I dont know what else to suggest.Jestr

Check when you type in 'NGC 4414' ,if you have it listed 3 times ,then you have the galaxy defined elsewhere (Selden's galaxies_extended file ?)If this is the case you should open my Dsc file with notepad which should look like this

Code: Select all

Nebula "NGC 4414"

   Mesh "ngc 4414.3ds"
   RA 12.441
   Dec 31.22
   Distance 3.06e7
   Radius 30000
}
# NGC 4414
Galaxy "NGC 4414"
{
   InfoURL "http://simbad.u-strasbg.fr/sim-id.pl?Ident=NGC+4414"

   Type "Sa"
   RA 12.441
   Dec 31.22
   Distance 3.06e7
   Radius 30000
}

then just delete the bottom half from the line
'#NGC 4414
Galaxy "NGC 4414" etc'
Check that the numbers in the Nebula section match the ones above though as I've changed them yesterday after Cham pointed this out to me.Cheers Jestr

Nice web site again Jestr
Have you any plans to link this and your moons site together,
from a central page, a bit like Don Edwards site ?

I too initially had trouble getting NGC 4414 to work. I found a fix but since I'm at work now I'm relying on memory (*very* dangerous) so hopefully I'm not confusing this with another texture.

The problem was a difference in the Mesh code and the actual name of the Mesh:

Code: Select all

Nebula "NGC 4414"

   Mesh "ngc 4414.3ds"
   RA 12.441
   Dec 31.22
   Distance 3.06e7
   Radius 30000
}

The code specifies ngc 4414.3ds while the mesh was actually named ngc4414.3ds. Remove the space between the "c" and the "4" in the DSC file and it should work fine.

My point is not to be rude, but I'm quite disapointed, since I was expecting more galaxies made in "NGC 4414"'s way... :wink:

A constructive criticism : you forgot to add model and texture for NGC 5195.

Anyway, NGC 604 is very well made, I love it !

Keep the good work.

To see the Universe in a grain of sand
And the paradise in a wild flower
Holding infinity in the palm of the hand
And eternity in a single hour
