Buenos Aires by night

Greetings, Celestians!

I have made a high resolution addition to Jens Meyer's 32K earthnight virtual texture, comprising the metropolitan area of Buenos Aires. I remember someone asking for this some time ago, when Jens presented his texture. Anyhow, at least ElPelado will like this one, I'm sure he will find Boca Juniors stadium down there.

As you see, the work is not perfect, there are some scratches or artifacts from the original picture, as well as certain missalignment, that I will correct if I have time.

Anyone interested may download the addon from here:

http://geocities.com/guillermo_abramson/celestia/banight1.zip
http://geocities.com/guillermo_abramson/celestia/banight2.zip
http://geocities.com/guillermo_abramson/celestia/banight3.zip

It's just 2MB in all, but I could not upload it in a single zip file. Forgive me.

This is a snapshot, using also my Blue Marble VT. You are looking to the northeast, across the River Plate. (Do you see the picture? I do not see it in the preview pane. Something to do with Geocities? Anyway, it's also there, in the celestia directory.)

Looks good! However, A reccomendation, if I may... Get a better web host! Geocities sucks (geosucks) won't let you outside link to images (as demonstrated above...), and there are lots of sites which give you more space too. 50megs.com is one example, but there are many, many more out there.

I think i'll make a topic about this in the Users Forum...

Now available at Fortunecity

Post #4by abramson » 12.12.2003, 15:43

Hallo again. Following Jack's advise, I have made Buenos Aires by Night available at a site different then Geocities. Let's se if the preview works:

Image

Nice. It does. Now the files:

http://members.fortunecity.com/guillermoabramson/celestia/banight2.zip
http://members.fortunecity.com/guillermoabramson/celestia/banight3.zip

Still, sorry for the fragmentation: there is a file size limit up there.

Kind regards,

Guillermo

Hello Guillermo,

I've downloaded your view onto Buenos Aires at night, but I found the colors to be too dark and redish.
So I did some tonal corrections, some contrast enhancement and removed some of the scratches.
Here are the results: New - Old

I've put the result into my download area (without level 10, because it seems to be only a enlargement of a previous one):

hope you like it,

A new version already! :D
I've certainly gotta say that it now matches your night texture very well, just wondering which one you are using in your screenshots?

all the best for '04

It's a 32k earthnight VT. I don't know if there are more of them on the net (are there?), but I think it's Jens one.

Come to think about it, you're right, it is the only one
Just wondered if you might have done a VT version of Dons night texture, like you have with his 16k earth texture

Oh yes I do. Very nice, Maxim, it blends very well with the other lights. I wonder if you used the version in which I had made a better alignment with the coast of Buenos Aires. But anyway, it was a minor misalignment, the origin of which, I believe, is the fact that the picture of Buenos Aires has been taken by an astronaut with a hand held camera, and it is as such affected by perspective, something that is not present in a "map" made from satellite images. I tried to correct this distortion in a second version (now there in my fortunecity site). But heck, I didn't corrct the tints. As a night vision, yours look better.

Happy New Year to everybody,

Guillermo

No, I didn't. The VT Version of Dons earth texture was just a quick task, because he asked for it in his post. I had just downloaded it, and so I let a Photoshop action script run over it, and put the result on the web.
I created such a script for own learning purposes - you throw in a 16k *.tif image, wait about one hour, and get out a ready tiled, named and distributed VT. It was a good test, because I've found a bug that I've overseen 'til then.

I downloaded it about 10-14 days ago. Don't know if that was the new version then. I think what I did't was quite similar to a gamma correction, only that I did it other way. The main reason for different colors with different imaging systems is their different gamma value. I've seen that the colors in your hires patagonia tiles are slightly to intense, but I hadn't found time to work on that. Perhaps you can correct that yourself simply by a gamma value adjustion, if you also watch a difference on your screen.

BTW, I would of course like to see more of those hires tiles of your region, if you find some spare time to work on that.

greetings :D

Yeah, you're right. Those images were originally gifs with rather poor colors. I tweaked them a little but not enough.

You know, next month I'm moving to the United States for one year. Who knows if I will have more time there than here, or a nice computer like mine...

Cheers,

Guillermo

Why not, Pelado? May be because, like in The Godfather, "they made an offer I couldn't refuse". Anyway, I'll be back in Bariloche in 2005.

Oh, may you all have a happy, safe and peacefull New Year!

Guillermo
