M83 and NGC4314 Add-ons

OK, here's my first novice attempt at contributing to this fantastic project, 3D add-ons for galaxies M83 and NGC4314. They can be downloaded from:

http://celestiamotherlode.net/creators/davemc/M83.zip

http://celestiamotherlode.net/creators/davemc/NGC4314.zip

The directory structure should be preserved within the Zip file so if you extract it to the Celestia\extras folder everything should be set up correctly.

I must give credit where credit is due. The 3D models used were created by (I think) by AstroBoy and Selden for some of their add-ons. I only did some very minor tweaking using Anim8or for these.

I'd appreciate any feedback - good, bad, or ugly.

Thanks!
Dave

Dave,

The pictures and models look great!
There's a problem with the DSC file for M83, though: it isn't oriented correctly when seen from the Earth.

Link to SEDS Web page for M83:
http://www.seds.org/messier/m/m083.html

As provided in your Addon:

Code: Select all

      Axis  [0.355837 -0.00635058 0.934527]
      Angle 20.3132

Image

With adjusted Axis and Angle so it almost matches the SEDS picture:

Code: Select all

     Axis      [-0.684308 0.726001 -0.0681571]
     Angle    123.464

Image

Generating more accurate values would take more time than I have right now and is left as an exercise for the artist :)

Hi Selden,

Thanks for the info! I'll add your M83 orientation values and then fine tune it as soon as I can.

Both add-ons should now have the correct (OK, at least close) orientations.
