TDRS and textures

Post #1by decrease » 12.09.2003, 05:11

I have made a Tracking and data relay satellite (the TDRS communicates data to and from the hubble to the ground there are currently 5 TDRS satellites in orbit) 3ds model from the NASA virtual reality archive. I was wondering whether anyone would put some nice satellite textures on it for me? Its a bit bland at the moment!!! Here is a SMALL Quicktime VR if you want to see what its supposed to look like with textures!!

Well Cheers for reading this thread anyway! :D

James...I've ony added textures to the panels...I think they need to be a lot longer.

You can get it here:

Thanks for the link by the way...some excellent payload models for the shuttle!!

Hello,
If it can help, my two eurocents:

A fine model for this sat family may be nice in Celestia.
In an .ssc file about geostationary sats (313 ones), by Thomas Guilpain, i extracts the TDRS':

(line about TDRS #2 was mine... and i changed Mesh lines with your stuff.3DS )
But, are positionings adapted w this model? It seems curiously oriented.
The last Guilpain's update:
# This file contains the orbital elements for 313 satellites on geostationary orbits around the Earth. The datas come from the Celestrak site : http://celestrak.com/NORAD/elements/
Date of last update : 6 July 2002
My small notes, for remenber me what are these satellites.
Tracking and Data Relay Satellites (1983- ) NASA
- TDRS A/1 83/04/05 (STS-6 Challenger): IUS failled, not efficient?
- TDRS B/2 86/01/28 (STS-25/51L Challenger...remenber)
- TDRS C/3 88 /09/29 (STS-26 Discovery)
- TDRS D/4 89/03/13 (STS-29 Discovery)
- TDRS E/5 91/08/02 (STS-43 Atlantis)
- TDRS F/6 93/01/13 (STS-54 Endeavour)
- TDRS G/7 95/07/13 (STS-70 Discovery)
- TDRS H/8 00/06/30 (Fus?e Atlas)
See: http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/multi/tdrs.htmlI see in the Launch/orbital pages some infos that i cant understand, but maybe can they help updating positionnement ?

Great stuff Jeam...If you would like the model at a different orientation...I can do that.

Best regards...bh.

Hello bh, Celestians
bh wrote:Great stuff Jeam...If you would like the model at a different orientation...I can do that.
Thanks,
Well, I had sought the preceding references to install these pretty models (agreement with you, bh, the panels seems a little short) I am unaware of if positionings of T Guilpain are still right today: it seems me to have read somewhere that some of the satellites were reorientated. And especially, as they are relay communication satellites, each one could have a particular orientation: if somebody knows where to find the information, these would be rather the ssc files that it would be necessary to modify, instead of the model itself? Dont, know, sorry. But it was nice to add another great model
