I have downloaded several addons but have not been able to get them t show up in celestia. I have copied their files in to Models, and Extras folders.
Please give me some "laymans" instructions on how to get these addons in to celestia.
thank you

What version of celestia are you using?
What are your system specs?
What addons have you downloaded from what sites?
What kind of video drivers etc do you have?
Have you tried turning on & off the labels of the different object types?
No-one will be able to help you if you don't provide these kinds of details... Most of the addons already do have "laymans" instructions included in the zip files!

Sven,
Please read the Web page http://www.lns.cornell.edu/~seb/celestia/addon-intro.html. It includes step-by-step instructions to help you understand how addons can be used.
Please let me know what improvements it needs.

Thank you Seldon for the web site I will take a look at it when I get off work. I'm sure that it will be able to get past my lack of programming skills.
I have downloaded a 4k earth and cloud texture, a deep space 9 model from Star Lion.
I also have a Messier objects file.
I am running celestia lores 1.2.4 low res. on win98. I have to run the low res. version or my computer freezes up on approach to earth.

Sven,
I'm sorry to say that the Messier addon will not work with v1.2.4.
DSC (Deep Space) catalog files are not recognized by v1.2.4. You need to consider upgrading to at least v1.3.0. (a lores version is available) One of the filles in the Messier addon (the .STC file) depends on an even newer "prerelease" feature (starnames in the STC file). It shouldn't cause 1.3.0 (or 1.2.4) to crash, but you won't be able to see the stars that compose two of Messier's objects with v1.3.0.
Although only the "medres" version is available for v1.3.1prerelease9, you can simply rename the medres directory to something else to improve Celestia's performance.
I trust you realize that the 4K surface textures will be rather slow, too.
