I may be wrong, but I suspect that these annular artifacts are inevitable, especially with grays.

I am convinced that big improvements are possible with a few OpenGL tricks (blending!) and appropriate GLSL shader technology. When CelestialMatters is back up again, I'll get into this issue in more detail.

Have you made any more progress? I would really like to use these in my Omega Galaxy add-on.

Afraid I've been gone a long time, but it was great to see this. This is very nice work Cham! Did you see the 3D visualiztion of M57 a couple weeks ago?
Dr. Frank Summers' work was done in Maya, but I imagine it would translate pretty easily to sprites in Celestia...
He did a short hangout on how he came up with the 3d structure...
