Hi Martin.
Just testing (as usual) your intriguing sprites nebula models, I tried a different way.
You say that you cannot solve the density problem, but I think this could be a different approach (obviously we are speaking of a non-scientific, didactic-only model).
I put three models, one within the other, with slighytly different radii, R.A. and DEC, in order to give a not-so-round result. and this is what happened.
I tried to modify the cmods in order to give different colors to the three models, approximating the real M 1 nebula ones, e.g. as follows
material # 1 Blobs
emissive 0 0 0
diffuse 0.2 0.4 0.7
opacity 0.2
texture0 "blob.png"
blend add
end_material
but, alas, it makes the nebula invisible, dunno why.
My mistake?

that representation is WAY too luminous !
And the prototype models I've published are all having a sprites overlapping problem (density too high).
Really, believe me : just trash them, and wait for the next generation models. They will be much better looking !
I still need to optimize the code, because it's too slow for my taste. Each new model is a pain to generate

Ok, the code is starting to give some good results . It's painfully slow, however. Need some optimization.
I'll publish the models once I get a nice collection of at least 10 models, with various shapes and colors, sprite size, etc. There are lots of parameters to play with.
About 8800 sprites and the ASCII CMOD file is less than 1MB.
The frame rate is excellent, so nothing to worry about here.
Compare this shape with the Crab thing :

This really realistic. As for the colors, maybe needs yellow, cyan, maroon, orange, green. Can you add filaments to the hourglass shots and get something like the ant nebula? The bases of the hourglass which ends in filaments?

A nebula (NGC 6302) in which the "hourglass" shape is filamentuos
In the ant nebula (Menzel 3) the filaments seem departs at ends of the "shots"

That's harder to reproduce. My models are too much approximate (pack of blobs) to reproduce these kind of shapes.

Another model, with a close comparison with the little crab...
And don't forget that the real picture on the left is actually a composite of several pictures in different wavelenghts. The luminosity and colors are exagerated, and the blue haze in the middle is from x-rays (or radio wavelenght ? I don't remember).

The last model that you do not like, looks very similar to NGC 6751, imho.

The Crab model is identical; no needs more. My only suggestion is, maybe, the colors which are matter of taste. The central filaments seems more sharpen in the real Crab, but should be they so whether, rightly, no multi-wavelenghts were applied? Of course I do not know how you get filaments, thus I can guess if they can be torqued to form doughnuts or other shapes.

I made another one, with an higher resolution (2.5MB CMOD file). Now, I don't know which one to use for the Crab.
