Hi,
for a better understanding of 3D modeling I started to convert some of the Nasa models into cmod files for Celestia.
=> Sounds simple... But this is a complicated work which is rather long, hard and by the way very tricky as well.
I started with Dawn...
So, here are the images:
For interested people here a download facility for the converted Nasa-Dawn probe.
http://www.file-upload.net/download-6815570/dawn.zip.html
(...the very small download button; white arrow within a small green field...)
original model is made by Brian Kumanchik & Christian Lopez / Nasa/JPL-Caltech (Thank you both & thanks to Nasa):
http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/3d_resources/assets/jpl-vtad-dawn.html
Please note: the.zip contains only the .cmod file and some necessary textures; no .sscfile for the trajectory.
Another note: Brian J's and Christophe's model is already available and with a little more details and includes also the trajectory .ssc.
=>As already mentioned this is my first conversion, so it's just an exercise for me.
I'll continue this project, so, more and other Nasa conversions are already planned, but still in a running process.
Consequently, any criticism is welcome and a review would be much appreciated.
Michael

Re: Nasa 3D model conversion
We need a model for Curiosity !
"Well! I've often seen a cat without a grin", thought Alice; "but a grin without a cat! It's the most curious thing I ever saw in all my life!"
Re: Nasa 3D model conversion
good point...olyv wrote:Ola,
Great models.
With more colors, it will be better (example solar panels in dark blue).
Yes, I've somewhat neglected the textures. I was too busy with the really complicated conversions...
Maybe at a later date I'll map new textures (currently I still have not the necessary knowledge about UV-mapping...).
Now I've firstonce have fixed the textures for the Aqua and Dawn probes.
If you like it well I'll renew the download files.
Oh, I need gravity grids...Cham wrote:We need a model for Curiosity !
Seriously; I'm just beginning with 3D modelling. Please do have a little patience...

Re: Nasa 3D model conversion
Hi Michael, very nice job, appreciated.
Your last version of Dawn and Aqua are most interesting, so, please, upload them.
I agree with Cham, we need a (good!) Curiosity model, and I would like to add a Skylab too, the one available for Celestia is very old and poor in detail.
Go on this way, please.
Bye
Goofy

Olyv, Goofy...
Some tests are still needed, but have currently not much spare time.
I'll upload the files in a few days.

Michael

Re: Nasa 3D model conversion
here are the new ones.
I gave both probes more brightness, made some color adjustments (as seen at different pictures and illustrations)...
DAWN

AQUA
Download (~1,53mb)
