danielj wrote:CAP Team, you have a GORGEOUS computer. Is Celestia running much faster or with better eye candy with this configuration?
I want some sort of this configuration for me until the end of 2011.
But I can?t afford a Core i7 Sandy Bridge.I will go with a Core i5.

While CAP Team's computer sounds good, I think his RAM is way too small for a CPU with so many cores. If each unit doesn't have enough memory for acting independently at ease, I would guess that a (nominally less powerful) CPU with fewer cores does a comparably good job.

So like in case of ChrisL's machine, an i7 should be able to cooperate with 12GB of good quality RAM (instead of only 4GB)!

A powerful machine like the one of CAP Team should be devoted to specific CPU-intensive tasks, in order to be sufficiently challenged! Such tasks should definitely be more challenging than compiling Celestia at times. ;-)

Anyway, the graphics power is great and rather independent of the CPU memory issue.

I am talking also about the GTX 460.It is one of the best video cards in the market, still today.

But in your original mail you referred to the computer as a whole NOT specifically to the graphics card. There's little discussion required about the GTX 460.

It was problem in gramatics and phrase construction.I was talking about the computer as a whole.I know that there is better video cards like the GTX 570 and 580,for example. And what about IntelXAMD?AMD is much cheaper than Intel, but it seems that the best computers here in foruma are still Intel...

Well my PC runs Celestia quite smooth with high frame rates, although I must admin that even with a SSD harddisk loading (VT) textures still slows down Celestia. Also showing orbits slows down Celestia considerably (frame rate wise), especially with spacecraft orbits enabled. Almost any solar system body uses SPICE kernels so they have to be loaded as well.

@Tootfri since Celestia is a 32 bit program, it cannot address more than 4 GB of RAM, so adding more RAM wouldn't make much difference for Celestia. I probably will upgrade the RAM to 8 GB in the course of this year (since it's quite cheap nowadays).

Ontopic: the ISS model looks great!
Windows 7 Ultimate x64, Intel Core i7 2600K 3.4 Ghz, 4 GB RAM, 120 GB SSD + 1 TB hdd, nVidia GTX460 1 GB, Celestia 1.6.0.xxxx

Among the other, Japan's quake seem to have damaged several semiconductors producers, so business men were speaking on TV net. Probably the things will changes. :(

My point was just that such a powerful i7 CPU would be an "overkill" if challenged mainly with 32 bit Celestia. Since I don't know your (professional?) needs concerning other possible CPU-intensive tasks, I can't judge. Certainly a scientist like myself has always good use for " monster number crunchers" ;-)

Note I am not talking about graphics here but about the pure CPU aspects.

Forgive my request but I'd like a 'stand-alone' model of the shuttle.

Here's what I've managed to extract from your excellent ISS...

Can you help me?

I have to take some credit for this model.

Sorry bob and over people who send me pm, I am very busy for over a year and I made very few visits to the forum, I had big problems with my eyes that much slowed me one.

The original model comes from NASA and I have changed, the SRMS and SSRMS OBSS are independent and the cargo bay doors and radar as you can see on my video uplooaded now on youtube

ISS Release 1 was already breath-taking for me, these pics of release 2 are really magnificent! Then I spotted this one sentence in this thread...

... and an idea popped up.

Long story short: the attached (zipped) SSC file should work in combination with Linuxm@n's ISS release 1 to make its solar panels sun-tracking.
Note that I made extensive use of reference frames, so I'm afraid it's only for Celestia 1.5.0 and higher - which is hopefully not a problem?

Robin

Wonderfull Thank you:
we have modified your ssc file and the solar panel will follow the sun in the future release 2 (exept atv and atv 2)

There are still many details to resolve before publication, I have to modelize the AMSS for STS-134 and make some animations with the Canadarm (airlock , node 2 jem...).

Please have a look on my iss page and select years 1998 and 2001 to see sts-98 and sts-88 movies.

You can wath directly on youtube

I confirm that the vid?o card is more important than the processor this addon work fine with a nvidia gtx 460/ 1mb dedicaced ram.

I had to create a new account on this forum my old account didnt work

Hello, some news
I'm still working on a new version, I invite you to watch videos:

http://www.youtube.com/user/celestiasws/feed

It is time for the calculations:

docking of shuttles and Soyuz, movements of the Canadarm to install the elements.

The iss is more and more detail will require a good graphics card.

The station appears after 25 seconds of loading, once it is fluid and you can zoom and move easily

i have a nvidia gtx460 1mb

Here! Here!

The Canadarm - now that brings back some memories, eh bh - it's great to see them actually working within the Celestia environment :D

I've just watched the beautiful animation of mission STS-130, and there is one hell of a skilled robotic arm operator on show - brilliant stuff !

Hi Linuxm@n.
I was very happy of your previous ISS version, but your new videos are absolutely "perfect", both models and animations.
BTW I was delighted by the tiny astronaut, moving around in the STS-98 movie, the Cupola covers opening, and the solar panels extension.
I hope you'll share soon the final result, cannot wait to show it to my students.
Just a little request: if it is possible, could you please add the xyz files (or the cel script) necessary to show a Shuttle (any, any mission) rising from e.g. 50 miles up to the orbit, with closed doors?
And the same for the Soyuz?
Just to show the ascent of both spaceships.
Thank you very much, whatever will be your reply.
Well done, appreciated.
Bye

Goofy :D

Thanks Mr L... unfortunately I'm on mac, with an in-built GMA 950... what a pile of crap.

As much as i love the mac, my Celestia experience with it has been woeful.
