Brown Dwarfs

Image

This is a brown dwarf as rendered by Celestia. Shouldn't a brown dwarf be darker and cooler? It is also in a binary system (Gliese 229), so it should be lit more on one side. Don't brown dwarfs give off little light? Is there an addon to make the dwarfs look better?

If you want it to be less bright, the easiest method is to replace the image file browndwarf.jpg which is in Celestia's folder textures/medres

I created the attached file using paint.net
The result is still surprisingly bright because of the way Celestia draws stars. They're always light sources and do not cast light on one another. Illuminating one another will have to wait until a future version of Celestia.

Alternatively, if you create your own Addon, you could define a large planet which uses browndwarf.jpg as its surface texture.

Nice! It is not perfect but based on your description I think this will be the best that we can get with Celestia 1.6
