Gliese 581 d

Post #1by kristoffer » 19.05.2011, 16:38

french scientists have found out by the climate on Gliese 581 d that it is stable and warm enough to have oceans, clouds and rainfall:

So I thought this could be a new project, before the scientists thought the planet was too cold, but they were wrong, because they said that the planet orbits outside the habitable zone, but it orbits closer then they thought, it orbits within the habitable zone:

Being in the habitable zone and actually having life on the planet are two different things entirely. And it should be pointed out that we do not have a clear idea of the actual nature of Gliese 581d: for example it could be more like Neptune in its composition rather than like the Earth.

If we want more seriously minded people to continue reading here, I strongly suggest to avoid such ridiculous headings!

I strongly echo this.
Can we change the thread title?

Edit: Thanks.

it might it might not have liquid water
it might be the core of a "hot" ice world , it might be anything

still being worked on about 1/2 has already changed

looks like the land on the planet is covered in snow, I think it could be some green there, not white, and looks like the texture isn't so good

Consider that this planet gets less energy from its star than Mars does from Sol. I think an ice-covered surface is quite appropriate.

As he points out, nothing about this world is known other than it's minimum mass and orbital period. A wide range of possibilities exist. Personally, I think Gliese 581 d probably resembles Neptune, lacking a phase boundary like is apparent in John's (artistic) rendition.
