Anne McCaffrey's Pern

I know some people have expressed an interest in this one, but there has been one glaring problem...the real Rukbat is not a "golden G-type star" as described in the "Dragonriders of Pern" series. Recently, I've seen the concession made that the star referred to in the series is a nearby G main sequence dwarf, but still named Rukbat for referrence purposes. For the past few months I've been working on a ssc for HIP 94668, a G5V approximately 21 ly away from Rukbat, but since dubbed (in the ssc, anyway,) as "Rukhbat."

If there is interest, I will get it completed and uploaded to the Motherlode as soon as possible. (in addition to posting pics.)

A couple more. I know what's here may not be perfect, and it is still subject to a little more clean-up, but I'm pretty happy with it.

I like your "Pern", but I would darken it up alittle. :D
Maybe something like this-

A flatter, deeper shade of blue, then? Lessee what I can come up with....

Here's some altered shots. I would need to fix some areas of shallow water and my spec map is giving me fits. But, what's here should give the general impression...

Ah, yes. Looks better. :)
Maybe a tad darker on the green land parts.

Which one, the blue or the green water? I like both equally well. IF I release this one, I want it to be as perfect as possible, simply because there's a pretty devoted McCaffrey fanbase out there, and I wouldn't want to needlessly tick them off.

Also, while the other planets are represented, I could find no information on size, mass, orbits, NADA. The only thing I did find was a vague diagram of the Rukhbat system (ie, planet order from the sun.) So, with all due respect to Ms. McCaffrey, I took a little poetic license and worked with what little info I could.

For example, the Red Star (a weird planetoid) orbits every 250 years in a highly elongated orbit. Every few hundred years, it doesn't come close enough to Pern to "interact" with it. I would have no clue how to program this in. So, it's there, but that's about it. The other planets (two other rocky worlds and two gas giants) as well as 2 asteroid belts are also represented.

Seriously, let me know which you all prefer...the blue or the green?

A greener shade of blue, is better I think.

I agree with Tim.

The greener shade of blue looks really better.

You know, at first, I wasn't too sure about the green. But now, I am inclined to agree. Green-blue it is! Thanks for the input. Any tips on spec maps? The one I have made is ok, but I keep getting dark flecks where I don't want them. I suppose the easiest thing would be to go through the map with a fine tooth comb and fix it.

But thanks again for the input!
