Selden, the squares are indicating that the blob.png texture isn't at its proper place (textures/medres folder). Check that you do have the proper texture correctly installed.

Let me modestly (yet a bit proudly 
) add that also in the standard Celestia distribution galaxies appear to be interacting pretty close to the actual configuration. This is of course NOT with Hubble resolution, and neither generated after simulating with 475000 particles , but still...:
