Saturn rings 3d chunks

Just an experiment for fun:

More performances based than aestetic they are not intended to be scientifically accurate, of course. I've only edited the colors from dark to slighty white. Low poly with lesser dimensions tends to shine too much.

Massimo:

Nice add-on but why just for fun. We don't have a ring particle field in Saturn's rings (yet). I think a few folks have experimented with adding one, but you are already well on your way. This would make a very nice permanent addition to Celestia. To make this really look like Saturn ring debris, ...

1. Triple the number and alter the size of the particles in the ssc file
2. Change the models to be rough spheres or other CMOD shapes rather than so angular. In fact, Celestia's basic models CMOD folder may already have enough obloids, rough spheres and asteroid shapes to suffice here.
3. Change their texture color to what scientists feel may be the most realistic color for Saturn rubble. Perhaps white/gray and rock colored mix ... There is supposed to be a lot of rock and ice in Saturn's rings.

Just some suggestions... but I think you're on to something here!

Hi Frank, thanks for suggestions. My job make me discontinuos in this time. I can do what you say, that is, to make it mooore realistic and more in number and of various dimensions with texture and normalmap; the problem is only the files' size, as long as one is ready to wait a bit before to have Saturn on screen when go there. For a good visual there is need a minimum of 500 polys each one, so the result will reach the billion and beyond! (I don't know about the power of Celestians' computers :), just now the whole polys is about half million ). Hope the suddivision in more file can help better than one single file; at least, this operation is necessary for texturing.

Ehi Frank, in more detailed mode (480 vertex per mesh) just the F(!) ring is 1.200.000 polys and the binary CMOD is 24 Mb. :!: The least I can do is increase the density of the low polys' rings.
