2001 a space odyssey release 2 available

Post #1by linuxm@n » 09.08.2008, 16:19

A new release is now available on my site, this include now cmod meshes, new models for discovery, aries, moonbus and pod.
Doors, pod arm radar are separate and mobile....
80 "xyz" and "q" files included in the data directory, this addon is complex please read the txt file.

You have to launch the scripts in the script folder ,it is better to launch the script and relaunch it immediately a second time to have best timing and performance
Listen first "the blue Danube" from Johan Strauss then you launch the script the blue Danube (i think i have forget it in the pack).
2 other script for the Dave Bowman EVA and the Franck EVA.
Remove older addon 2001.
If you don't want to use script you can now use a cel-url page in the "html" folder of this addon, the same page is on my site.
Perhaps i will do some update for some ssc file or script in a few days.

This addon require a good 3d videocard with 256mb dedicaced video ram or more.
1 gb or more for memory ( read txt instruction files for more information )

Download it here (end of page):

http://celestiasws.free.fr/pages_en/200 ... ey_en.html

in this page you can download video from the scripts

WOW! I cannot believe the amount of time you must have taken to create this add-on. It is simply stunning work! Congratulations~! :D

I also cannot understand everything you did to get the animations you built into the add-on. Doors opening, platforms dropping ... complex rotations and movements of the spacecraft ... it is just ... well ... WHAT CAN I SAY :) You are brilliant!

FYI,
1. Some of your celURLs do not go to the exact spot you wish, but are offset somewhat ... at least on my computer. This may be due to the fact that most of the celURLs are larger than 256 characters. When that happens, Celestia can sometimes get a little lost.

I have taken the liberty to re-compile the "correct" celURLs as hyperlinks into a small HTML document file, but I can't seem to figure out how to attach it here. I thought this forum would now allow attachment not only of images, but of some simple data files??? Anyway, if you'll send me your email address, I'll send you the celURLs.

2. Your opening cel script for the Blue Danube sets the star magnitudes at 16, and ambient light quite high. On my system, that brightens the scene so much with stars and ambient light on the spacecraft that things look far too bright! Just a suggestion ... but you may want to tone things down a bit in that script.

3. As you may know, Vincent was able to insert sound code into Celestia 1.5.1 and has created Celestia 151-ED, a sound version of Celestia 1.5.1. Your add-on not only runs great on that version, but it is capable of playing sound files. That includes some actual voice clips from the movie, as well as the capability to launch the Blue Danube from within your script. I went online looking for some sound clips and was surprised to find several, including some short voice clips between Dave and HAL. That would make a great effect in your add-on.

I am putting Vincent's Celestia 151-ED version on the motherlode for downloading, in just a few days days. Look for it in the education page. :) If you wish, I can help editing your scripts to add some sound clips.

My email address is fsgregs@comcast.net

Thanks for all your work. The add-on is ... wonderful!

If you can't attach a file directly, you might consider putting it into a zip archive. I know zip files can be attached.

Linuxman, just a parenthesis, you can now upload your pict directly in the forum! (much practical then using any pseudo free hosting server)

I have very successfully added sound to Linuxman's magnificent 2001 add-on. It uses Celestia151-ED, which will be available on the motherlode education page within a few days, and is also included in my sound add-on to 2001. I was not only able to launch the Blue Danube automatically from within the script, but have also created a really nice sound script to the music from Also Sprach Zarathustra.

I am sending Linuxman the complete sound add-on (including a working copy of Celestia151-ED.exe) first to check out, but since the add-on uses wav files for sound, it is big. The Blue Danube.wav file alone is over 100 MB in size. The complete zip file is 112 MB. As such, I am trying to ftp the zip file to him, but am having some trouble. We seem to connect, but the file transfer never begins.

Unless someone has another suggestion, I will ftp the file to the motherlode for temporary transfer purposes ASAP.

That brings me to a question. Let's assume Celestia is now running a script containing large amounts of models and textures like the 2001 add-on, AND is also playing music through the internal sound card. My computer can handle it, but frame rates are about 14 fps. I would love to make a YouTube video of that complete script, with music. Sadly, I tried to use Celestia's built-in movie capture. I want to capture a BIG part of the screen rather than just 320x240 or 600x480, at 24 frames/sec. However, when I tried capturing a video size of 1024x768 and started the movie capture going, Celestia slowed to a crawl and barely moved at all. Frame rates dropped to close to zero. It was a big BUST.

Is there any 3rd party open source software that will capture a computer screen as a movie (take 24 screen captures per second)? That way, Celestia may not slow down. I can always merge the music with the video using some other software, or perhaps that same software can also capture the output from the sound card at the same time.

Any suggestions anyone? How does one make a BIG YouTube video of Celestia doing its thing?

I just now tried Windows Media Encoder.
It can't even come close to keeping up: I get 1 fps for a small region at low resolution.
Maybe you'll have better luck.

Frank,

Did you remember to visit all of the scenes in Celestia *before* trying to record them? Otherwise Celestia will hang while loading models and textures, which does nasty things to the recording.

Which codec did you select for Celestia's recording?

Recording performance is going to be a function of the CPU speed of the codec + the I/O speed of writing to disk.

I've always had the best overall success when selecting "uncompressed" and using Windows Movie Maker to convert it to WMV format. (Be sure to select the correct aspect ratio in WMV's Options/Advanced menu)

Uncompressed uses the most disk space. As a result, good recording speed requires that the output disk be defragmented, with lots of contiguous empty space.

Selden:

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I also tried making the movie in Celestia using uncompressed video. I also did run the script several times first, so that the models loaded before I tried recording. It is not that the models hang during recording ... it is that the entire program hangs. Although I have a decent system, my computer cannot refresh the Celestia screen and record 24 frames/sec and play music at the same time, without frame rates dropping to 1 or 2 fps. That is why I was wondering about 3rd party recording software.

I tried defragging but that did not improve the speed.

The add-on is just too beautiful to confine to a tiny recording window. Has anyone been able to run the 2001 add-on and record a movie of it at 1024x768 at normal speed?

Recording Orion docking in the space station on my home system at 1024x768 uncompressed, using your first URL but starting somewhat later, seemed to record at about 5 fps, judging from the jerkiness of the on-screen image. Celestia claimed a framerate decreasing from about 30 fps to 15 fps during the recording interval.

I used Windows Movie Maker to translate the 950MB avi into a 1MB WMV file at 640x480. (WMM won't write 1024x768.) The result plays reasonably smoothly.

I recorded again from Celestia, using an XviD MPEG-4 codec. The recording frame rate seemed to be about the same (5fps?) although the resulting avi file was much smaller: 1.6MB instead of 950MB. The playback of the 1024x768 movie was reasonably smooth.

System configuration:

1GB, 3.4GHz p4-550; Win XP Pro SP3
256MB, GF 7800 GTX; Forceware v175.16
Celestia v1.5.1 final
Linuxm@n's 2001 Addon

p.s.
1. Don't forget that the visible recording rate is supposed to have no relationship to the playback rate. It spends a lot of time doing the encoding, but the playback is supposed to be at whatever encoding rate you've specified -- typically 24 or 30 fps.

2. YouTube reduces the resolution of whatever you upload to be quite small (320x240 and highly compressed) so that streaming can be done to slow computers over slow network connections. You'll need to use some other video service site to get full-resolution playback.

This is a key point. Even if the encoding proceeds at 1 frame per second, Celestia's clock simulation clock will still advance at 1/24 or 1/30 second. Thus, even though you have to wait a while to create the movie, it should still play back smoothly when you're all done. Mouse and keyboard movement still relies on the system clock though, so you could end up with some jerkiness from that; but scripts should be smooth.)

EDITED

I have succeeded in making a video of my script from Also Sprach Zarathustra with music, in 640 x 480 format, using Linuxman's magnificent add-on. It is really good. It is a 5.3 MB WMV file. I would put it on YouTube but they always shrink it down in size.

It has been stored in my creators folder on the motherlode. Here is a link to download it:

http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/creators/fsgregs/Celestia_2001_Demo-public.zip

I am amazed at how beautiful Celestia has become as a space simulation. Its capabilities, its great add-on designers ... its ability to run scripts ... WOW! :D

Enjoy the video

This 1.51ED seem to ignore "q" file and the timing, and rotation don't work correctly in this release, he seems to work like celestia 1.41 .

We can see it on this excellent movie then the pod is going outside discovery or then you launch my scripts (dave bowman-eva and murder-franck)

Have you the same results then you compare celestia 1.51 and celestia 1.51ED ?

For my url page celestia-kde replace hal 9000 by hal20%9000 then i create an url ,i will change this in a few day.
I have change the color skin of the starshild , an update will include this meshe and scc file for this.
