Project Wu'kn (Venoes)

Hi everyone

As you know I had started work on system that is soon to be released. I must say that I am very pleased with myself because ALL of the textures (except for the clouds) were done by me! I have to thank all the people who responded to my "Texture Posts" and gave me information that changed my creating methods. Venoes is also called Wu'kn however that was the codename for this system. Venoes is a K2V star slightly bigger than our own Sun and has 5 planets in orbit around it. It is very unique as it is a system that is home to a "Water Giant", a planet roughly 14 to 15 times the size of the Earth but only 1/8 the size of Planet Jupiter. Its atmosphere is mostly water, methane and ammonia. These giants are believed to be the true cousins of "Ice Giants".

As a reward for helping me out with the texture questions I posted I have some screenshots for you of Planet Venoes IV which is very good for my first attempt of creating an Earth Like planet from scratch. Anyways here they are:

Bob,

Have you got Photoshop CS2? If you have then I could give you tips on how I done it :)

First of all I got an Earth map from the internet. Then I opened it with photoshop and created a new image "1024x512" "Custom". I set the background colour to a very dark blue and then I began to create my continents and islands. To do this I used the "Clone Tool", pointed my cloning target over the ORIGINAL Earth map and then I switched back to my map and began painting the cloned image in. Once I had done this I began to brush things up a little. I cleaned up the edges of my continents and islands, created polar ice caps and I put in deserts, rivers, and a few lakes. I finally made sure that my texture map was seamless by cutting the image in half, swapped the 2 sides around and used the clone tool to wipe out the seam line. I then merged the 2 parts of the texture back together and saved it as a JPG in "Medres". I also went back to my texture and "Desaturated" it to create a bump map. I also saved this as a JPG. To get the clouds I just went on a sattelite station website, got a copy of some clouds from Earth in Spring, resized them and saved it as a PNG. Thats how I created my planet !!

P.S I done the same for the Planet's Moon :D

Nope, but I do have a very wide variety of other graphics programs. Chief among them is, of course, The Gimp.
If I'm not very much mistaken here, you can do almost anything with the Gimp. Of course, if I had any artistic ability, it might help too.

I installed into my extras directory and renamed all files so that they conform to current ML suggestions (for compatibility on other systems.)
In other words, I created a Venoes directory which contains the STC and SSC files, as well as a textures and models directory.

This methodology is very much easier to maintain on my system, but the point of this post is to let you know that your textures are very interesting.
I like the level of detail and care provided in the making of the textures. They look very nice over here. I also like the way in which they have been placed
on the outside of the galactic system. Unique and interesting.

By the way, your Moon III - orbiting Venoes V - might very well be a great starting point for what dalmation_fanatic is looking for in hist post HERE. Maybe you could share this model with him?

Just a thought...

Thanks, Bob
