Mr Noob,

In computer communications, using all capitals is the equivalent of shouting and is considered extremely impolite.

Capitalizing every word incorrectly causes people to ignore the message. It's immediately taken to be an indication of content-free spam.

You might want to rewrite your post.

Hmm, tempting.

O_o oooh pretty cool. I hope the textures are of high quality. People tend to make crappy textures if they are mass-produced :(

Hungry,

I'm with you...

I am trying to hang on long enough to see the New Horizons
Mission accomplished, but I think it's going to be a close thing.

As far as Mr. Noob's web site goes, all I saw was a bunch of
advertising and a lot of crap. I certainly wish you the best, but your
choice of hosts leaves something to be desired.

Sorry, Grumpy OLD Geezer Bob

I shall be on my death bed, watching the New Horizons images come in, and at last I shall utter "And now, I may die in peace".

Mr. Noob. If you will, take a look at these two ring textures. One is made by somebody (I forgot who :( ), and the other is Saturn's. Now, compare them with yours.

Saturn's:

One from somebody's add-on:

And... yours...

... do you kind of see what we're getting at?

Perhaps you can put a little more "effort" into them.

I tried to make rings once... Looked just like that...
I made them for the planet Uranus... They sucked... Kinda...
I just suck at texture making in general...

I don't know how to make ring bands, but looking at those images you've posted has given me an idea... spectral scans. I suppose they could be used as a starting point for creating ring bands? That being the case, then the possibilities for variations are close to endless.

What image-manipulation software do you have?

I made the rings for this planet in less than 10 minutes using Photoshop. They are entirely rendered; no cloning of any kind was done. Even though I do say so myself, I think the rings turned out rather well.

When doing planetary rings, it is essential that you save the ring texture in a format that supports alpha-channel transparency. PNG format is best for this. If you are not using alpha-channel transparency, you are wasting your time because you will not be able to create decent planetary rings that look good.

If anyone's interested, I'll write a short tutorial on the creation of planetary rings.

Sorry bdm, I've not been by in a while, but I did want to follow up on this 'idea'.

I checked out the rings you made, very nice.

In answer to your question, I use Gimp 2 with the GTK+ Runtime Environment (for WinXP) for image manipulation. I would be interested in knowing how you made the ring bands for your planet, a mini tutorial would be nice. I understand what an alpha channel is and its use in transparency, so I've that much of a head start lol.

My idea for using spectral scans as a starting point actually came from seeing the many different samples of them from stars. I think that would be pretty unique - ring bands of planets actually patterned from their star's spectral scan.
