I just built this model thats 4x more then the one I uploaded to the Motherlode. About 2.1 million verts. Thats 115 MB. It's getting to the point were it doesn't need a texture. It is almost unuseable though. The framerate is a crawl. What I did was make bookmarks with the model off, then turned it on and navigated by the bookmarks. Anyhow,

Not only Celestia, but Blender too. I had to do this one step at a time.
That is push a key then save/close/open, then another key then save/close/open, and so on and so on. I was amazied 8O that it could be done. I may try olympus next.

cartrite,

looks nice, but why did you take Mars without atmosphere??

First reason. 0.222 frame rate. Even with all non essential items off.
Second
The model must float above the surface so it doesn't sink into the sphere below. I tried to get it as close as possible but can't get it close enough. So even with the atmosphere on you only see it on the horizon and can't see the sky.
Anyhow I ran into problems with my cmod export script when I tried to do a full planet model of mars with 2.1 mil vertices. This Valles model always worked so I decided to try it and see if it was a memory problem. Anyhow it was not. The problem seems to be in the way I subdivide the plane with Blender. When you hit subdivide you get 4 squares, then 16, etc.. If I subdivide like this it causes the export script to crash. So I must erase the middle vertices and make 2 faces to start the plane. Then I can subdivide to 2.1 million and the script runs fine.

I thought the pics were neat so I posted them. I'm still expierimenting with ways to show an atmosphere over this model so during daylight you see the sky.
