Ooh! Pretty! I want! How did you get the image? When you DL the image, it has the borders around it. Did you cut the borders out, and resize it?

Of course, I cut the borders and resize to 4K PNG, that is all.

There is someone, called "tabuzz", who have made a 4K texture of jupiter and you can download here:

Malenfant...thanks for the heads up...I made a 4k jpg. Does it need a bumpmap I am wondering?

As far as I can tell, the images are 3600 pixels across, so a 4k texture is blowing it up, which is probably a Bad Thing...

That definitely needs to be part of the Motherlode :)

Extremely sexy texture ! Very good ! Thanks a lot for sharing this !

Actually the images are 4000X2400,so blowing up to 4096X2048 is not so bad...

I just checked it out in Celestia, and it is truly kickass. So much better than any other Jupiter texture i've seen.

I'm getting some super views of Jupiter using these...
Large image...

Image

I had to convert to dds however...celestia would not display 4k png and jpg images for some reason!

Please don't "sleep" ;-) . .. Look at the image: the net jupiter image size
that has to be cut out is significantly smaller than 4000x2400, namly
3600x1800 ONLY. This means that 23% ~ 1/4 of the pixel
information of a regular 4k image is MISSING and possibly distorted
by blowing up.

It's always good to check first!

You might have overloocked my old 2k Jupiter texture from 2002 ;-)
Things were not THAT bad ...

I wasn't here in 2002. I just discovered Celestia this January :P. So I hadn't seen* your texture before. And this one does* still look nicer.

Since I DO NOT publish my work in the Motherlode, it might always be worth checking for other (familiar?) places that specialize on HIGH QUALITY ;-) .

Code: Select all

1.0 - (3600/4096)^2 = 0.23

You got to count the pixel-difference in the texture AREA, hence the SQUARE of the ratio.

Here is a more simple-to-understand derivation:

The number of pixels in a 4k texture is

Code: Select all

4096*2048 = 8388608

In the present Jupiter texture there are only

Code: Select all

3600*1800 = 6480000 pixels.

Hence the difference relative to a 4k texture is

Code: Select all

(8388608 - 6480000)/8388608 = 1.0 - (3600/4096)^2 = 0.23

I don't really know where these places are. I've found a few websites that offer models, which I've used for my Star Wars universe. And I found some French website that I couldn't even read that had some nice textures for some of the smaller moons of the outer planets. I'm still learning :) And google'ing lots.

It would be nice if people would update the Celestia Wikibook to include the results of their efforts to locate resources for Celestia. Even better if content creators would describe their offerings there in the first place.
