alt textures for messiers &ngcs

does anyone know if we can use alt textures for messiers and ngcs.i have many alt textures and would like to know if i can use them. if so how would i do that. can anyone help.
AltSurface declarations work only in SSC catalog files, not in DSC files.
It'd be very useful if they did work, though.
