Good evening,

At first I have to excuse myself... I'm not the best in English... but i have a big problem (or a big question)

Also I've a Graphiccard with 64 MB (its a GeForce 4 MX 440) - My Computer have 2,4 Ghz and a Harddisk with 160 GB

Now my Question:
I've a presentation next week (in my school) and i want to work with good textures... Is it possible with my Grapiccard to show an 16000x8000 pixel graphic liquid? what can I do (an 8000*4000)clip would also be god :D

thanks,

RiFl,

You don't mention how much memory your computer has. JPG and PNG images have to be decompressed before they can be loaded into your graphics card, which will compress them into its internal format, usually DXT or equivalent.

16Kx8Kx4 = 512MB.
8Kx8Kx4 = 256MB.

So if your system has less than about 700MB, it'll be very, very slow because it has to use Virtual Memory: it will page the decompressed image to disk.

Ok, thats clear now, that means that it's independet from the graphicchipsize... but it depends on the Size of the RAM!?

A Texture with 8192*4096 should also be no problem....

Ah, could it be that de result is better when i disable the virtual memory? - so the comupter can only write in the RAM? - Because I had also problems with the 8192*4096 file (jpg, 7 MB) it was not as much trouble as with the big one, but it was not a liquid view!

And pleas give me a link to a good textur file.... (i used always they from http://www.space-graphics.com or so)

thanks for a answer,

Sorry to intercept - but it's not advisable to use a pure 8k texture with a MX 440. It will be incredible slow - unless it is a VT Texture. Using a DDS version maybe work, but it's a walk on the borderline.

Hm, what texture do you want? There are a lots of them.
Most JPG/PNG textures should also have a DDS version available. If you're looking for earth, I would recommend one of Don Edwards. Just look at the Motherlode. You may also look for VT or VT/DDS there.

-->In the thread below someone has written that he is working with a !!64k!! texture with a geforce 2 (64 MB) and 512 MB Ram !? Is that possible... that would be great.....

64K Jestr Earth Mark II (VT/DDS) this texture will not work with my chip or its to big i think... (i hope you will say something else)

I don't think there are any natural features available yet, but there is jestr's Stonehenge and I can't quite remember, but I think someone did a model of the Eiffel Tower.

Cheers for highlighting the link, because I see that jestr's UK VT levels 6 to 10 in DDS is available on the motherlode. :D

No problem :D

But do you know if this high-resolution graphic can work with my computer?
Yes.... building such 3D Features would be much work... but it would be enought when the mountains are like the Olymp on Mars - Does anybody know such a map? - Where are mountains also in the third dimension?
