Hi res issues

There seems to be a problem when it comes to showing hi res textures on my computer.
Here's an image to give you an idea of what I mean.

Basically I tried to use a hires texture for the rings, and a VT for the cloudmap. The rings are supposed to look like saturns.

When I turn off the cloud map, all the textures go black, so I get a black planet with black clouds and black rings...and a pretty blue atmosphere.

At first I was conviced that it was just my Ati Radeon 9200 graphics card. But updating the drivers didn't fix the problem. It could still be Ati card, but I can't think of a way to fix it.

Help!

This is a normal behavior for a very high resolution cloud map. You have to manually stop the clouds movement in the solarsys.ssc. Just change the CloudSpeed 65 to 0.

Ahh!! Thank you! That fixed the cloud texture problem.

The rings however, are still a little wierd. I got the 4k saturns rings texture from Jim's site.

They are supposed to look like saturns rings. But the results I got are seen in the picture I posted earlier. They do look nice...but...

The ring texture flickers and changes based on how far away from the planet I am.

some video cards will only handle up to a 2k ring
i think that the older nVida cards are 2k max
so try resizeing it

I'm using an ATI Radeon 9200, what is the max texture size that it can handle?

Try 'Help -> OpenGL Info' in Celestia.

It only handles 2k..ugh...that's depressing. What graphics cards would handle higer resolutions?

Usually you would need a card with more than 128MB VRAM.

Unfortunately, no ATI card can handle a texture larger than 2K. Even the x800 is limited to 2K. Nvidia's 4xxx, 5xxx and 6xxx cards all support 4K textures.

Is it possible to force an Ati card to handle 4k textures, or would that result in total destruction of the card.
