earth 3d

I haven't been to this site in a while. But I ran across Earth 3d while looking for some simple downloadable maps for north america. It's a pretty clever design, I'm not an expert or anything. But it downloads new, higher resolution surface maps the more you zoom in, and seems to dump the unneeded images out of memory. Much like keyhole, but this one is free and covers far less detail at closer ranges.
This has probably been discussed quite a bit on this forum but I would like to know if something like this has been considered at all for celestia. Of course celestia wasn't designed for this purpose and i'm sure it has take enough effort as it is but there seems to be enough obsession about higher detail images.
Also if someone could point me to maps of north america, something similar to expedia but downloadable for linux.
Keep up the good work
