What's the highest/most complete level of detail on a VT anyone has ever gone up to? I suppose people have gone super close up on their home cities now and then, but I'm talking overall.

I want to see my home city rendered in full streetmap-size on the earth map. I'd do it myself too, but I can't even find a decent satelite picture of any non-US, non-Middle-eastern cities. Not free images anyway. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I am here:
LATITUDE 49.954930
LONGITUDE -97.16632
ELEVATION 671

Ps. Why doesn't someone write a program that automates the VT building from massively detailed satelite photos? I understand that this is a painstaking process which interested people have heretofor done by hand.

Anonymous guest,

You might want to consider scanning in a map yourself.

Don't forget that you don't have to use a VT to place a map of your local area on the surface. An example of positioning a flat map is at http://www.lepp.cornell.edu/~seb/celestia/map-plane.html

If only there were lots of massively detailed satellite photos around. It seems you have to pay to get much in the way of detail. There are a few mapping sites that include aerial photos, but these have to be mosaiced together which can take a while.Theres a few false colour Landsat images and quite a lot of black and white images,Earthetc.com has some big ecw files available on their website (mostly US cities),DigitalGlobe.com presumably have the whole world in high detail but it costs and anyway to have the whole of the Earth at this level in VT's will (I'm guessing here) be hundreds of Gigabytes and over 2,000,000 tiles at level10.Let me know if you find some good free images,Jestr
