Ocean Color
All of the hi-res Earth maps I've downloaded have had a good deal of ocean coloration, but the quality of the oceans has been severely affected by the compression. Where can I find the source imagery used for the oceans? All of the 1 km/pixel Blue Marble images I've dl'ed have flat, one-color oceans, except around the coastlines. Thanks.

Well there are mine.
Also there are the ones available at http://WWW.SPACE-GRAPHICS.COM
Mario was probably one of the first to give the oceans a little more depth than the BlueMarble textures they are based on. So are mine. But they are only at 16k and they are already compressed to the .DDS format. Mario's textures are also 16k but are in a middle of the road quality .jpg format. I do wish he could have released them in a higher quality form. I have been doing some heavy work to his textures and have had to do some interesting things to clean up the .jpg compression artifacts left behind. My versions of his textures are coming alone nicely but they will only be available in the 16k .DDS format as per usual. Trying to make a .png or high-res .jpg version of the files is just out of the question do to bandwidth issues. It is the same reason Mario chose to give the lower resolution 16k versions. It helps in the bandwidth usage.
Now if you are truly desperate for a different ocean layer for making textures based of the BlueMarble textures I could possibly make my ocean layer available to you for download. You would have to add it as a layer to any BlueMarble texture. You might have to do some fine tinning as I occasionally have to do. So if you are interested give me a PM and I will see what I can do and how small a 16k .png I can make it. It would have to be in the .png format for space saving and bandwidth and to keep the alpha transparency. Let me know.

Ah, never say never!!
Past texture releases, Hmm let me think about it
Thanks for your understanding.
