You need a plugin; you can get it here: http://developer.nvidia.com/object/nv_texture_tools.html. I hope this helps.

amiganr1,

The DDS Plugin for Photoshop is somewhat buggy.
The error occurs sometimes while Photoshop starts swapping image data because of unsufficient main-memory. Once you've got the error, the plugin stays corrupted, and Photoshop doesn't recognize the file format any more until you restart.

Try either to keep your memory as empty and non-splitted as possible (don't run other applications simultanouesly) or upgrade your mainboard with more memory.

hope that could help,

maxim

Hey guys,
Even with all the memory I have 1.5gigs, I can't open a 16k .DDS in photoshop. As far as I am conserned the plug-ins limit is an 8k .DDS texture. I guess if you had 3gigs of RAM it might work.
Maxim you stated that you had to restart to get the plug-in to work once it crashed. You should have said he will need to restart Photoshop. The way you stated it it sounds like he needs to restart the whole system and he doesn't.
I know I wish the plug-in was more stable and had a better way of managing memory. But we also have to blame Photoshop for that. All these years and Adobe can't seem to make Photohop a little more memory savy with an XP system. Even with is considered allot of memory and Photoshop can just crawl. Thats why it is taking me forever with the big 32k texture.

Ah, never say never!!
Past texture releases, Hmm let me think about it

Thanks for your understanding.

You are right Don, I'm sorry, that was misunderstoodable (Hmpf... I always wonder if my germanlike declination of english words is somewhat correct).

Playing around a little bit, I must confess, that my problems with *.DDS indeed start at 8k not 16k (doesn't work at all). I had in mind having no problems, but that's because I've forgotten that I first use IrfanView to convert from *.DDS to *.TIF and then switch over to Photoshop with that format.

nice days to all of you, :D

The phrase "why use a sledgehammer to kill ant?" and comes to mind....

A program called "IRFANVIEW" from http://www.irfanview.com/ can do this (convert from dds to PNG or whatever) easily.

I just tried it on a 16k earth texture and it went quickly (from DDS to PNG), on a 1Gb RAM machine it didn't even blink.
