Great new (at least to me) Comet Texture

Don't know if the following has been around or not, but the following comet texture - i.e. "comet3.jpg" can be found at the following site.

http://exp.arc.nasa.gov/downloads/celes ... es/medres/

When applied to Hale-Bopp, Halley or any other comet, it makes a vast improvement in the display. I believe the normal comet SSC file utilizes the "asteroid.jpg" file which is installed with Celestia. This file does *not* do justice to Halley's Comet or to Hale-Bopp.

Give this texture a try. It makes for a very pleasing (and I believe more accurate) display of these Celestial wanderers.

The "Comet3.jpg" file is approximately 539k and should be used to replace the "asteroid.jpg" references in any SSC which references a comet.

Take care, Bob

Thanks

if you are talking about the Comet3.jpg ?
I made that texture by combining my Asteroid tetxture with part of a 2k Europa texture.

Also you don't have to replace your Asteroid texture to use it.
just find the Comets in your ssc files, and edit them to use the Comet texture.
otherwise all your Asteroids will look like ice Comets.

Click the www button at the botom of my reply
and you can find the whole zip file containing more.

Uh-huh

Thanks a bunch, Paul. If you read my original post again, you'll see that your suggestion is exactly what I suggested that other users do to improve the appearance of their comets. I still have my asteroid texture too. I just modified the SSC's which referenced any comets I had.

Your texture is a GREAT improvement over the asteroid method. Again, thanks for the file.

Take care, Bob

PS - You're in London? I was born in Cambridge. <Cheers>

I also noticed this one: http://exp.arc.nasa.gov/downloads/celes ... -world.png , if anyone has ever downlaoded and looked through my solar system, they'd know thats my planet. NASA stole my planet! Well, at least re-named it. That kinda sucks.

Yep Sorry Bob I did missread your post a bit
but my head is a bit groggy at the moment, I think the onset of a cold is emerging.

Im glad you like it, I just wanted to make my comets look Icey

Actally i think I used three textures to make the Comet
My original Asteroid texture, part of Europa, and part of Deimos.

Bob and Darkmiss,
Thanks guys! I like the new comet texture! Looks more like a comet should, Hmmm, come to think of it, I've never really seen a comet up- close like. Ahh, you know what I mean!
