jestr,
This server is slower than slow. It took 2 minutes just to download the .ctx files. I will waite and try latter but I hope someone can help you out and host this this. At this rate its going to take days to download.

Sorry it is slow I've been trying to speed it up a bit but I have a upload bandwidth limit of 11K-split between a number of people is not much.If anyone else wants to host it E-mail at

Of course it's slow, how do you dare to offer a great improvement for mars hosted at your home computer, and expect us all don't to race retrieving it ASAP...
Specially if it involves a lot of MB. Luckily, at least I restrained from downloading it for some time, advancing these troubles.
A solution could be to offer it via Bittorrent. This way, the load would be shared.

Question: Do we need the normalmap you made?? I see that the mars texture is already with shadows...

It looks OK without the normal map but the normal map adds a good bit of detail to the texture-but of course ,it's up to you whichever you think looks best

I expect you can probably find many faces on Mars if you look hard enough.I think the one your on about only looked the way it did because the satellite image was blurry and low detail-when they looked for it again with higher detail satellite the area looked nothing like a face-maybe aliens moved it in the meantime? It would probably take a few years to compile a virtual texture for the whole of England to the same level of detail as I have done for Somerset,south-west England and the midlands. You are welcome to download the tiles I have done
ftp://celestia:addons@81.108.221.84
but this is only a very small part of the country. If anyone knows of any large scale good quality aerial photo images of large parts of England or anywhere in the world for that matter I'd be happy to convert/cut up these into tiles for Celestia. All the best Jestr

Hello,
Just wanted to say that I managed to download the both maps on Friday and Saturday. It was well worth the effort (although easy for me with 'always on' broadband). I think VT's are a great development. Thank-you for all your hard work too.

Enjoying Celestia.

As a fellow ntlworld 'always on' broadband user, I decided to start downloading this 20 mins ago.....ah well, i'm currently at 1 day 12 hours remaining.
Just hope I don't have another powercut like we had at the weekend -which has resulted in my Outlook Express being completely trashed

jestr, It seems that the East & West halves of Mars VT
have 2 differant shades of color on all levels, can this be fixed so
that they blend better at the seam? Thanks for all your hard work. Mark

You are right the two halves are subtely different am fixing it now -give me a few hours though-cheers Jestr

OK it's done ,now there is no difference between the two halves, thanks for pointing this out I didnt notice this -I must have been too busy looking at the detail of the craters and canyons.all the best Jestr

does it means we have to download the VT again?

If you lokk close between 'ma'adim vallis' and 'mangala valles' on Mars you can see a small difference between the colour of east mars and west mars. Its up to you if you want to download again but the jpgs are smaller now in size (Kb)- but the same size (512x512 pixels) and same quality (I think).Jestr
