Polar pinch

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned before, but does anyone have a good method for eliminating the strange 'pinch' of mapping to a sphere?
Been using some planet generators and haven't found a good projection for it. I could labor over converting sinusoidal > square, but... that's a lot of work.
