Virtual Texture Documentation

Where can documentation for the virtual texture file (set) structure be found? I downloaded Jim's "Colored 8k Moon" ctx set (by accident actaully) and (ater scrounging up 1.31pre9) found it works beautifully. So, naturally, I want all my 16k textures in this format. A DevIL tool to do this shouldn't be too tough to build. Maybe 32k and higher are now feasible? Anyway, where is the new format documented?

Hello,
Not quite sure what you mean, so I dont know if this will help.
Virtual textures are supported by Celestia, but there aren't any yet in the default download. So at present they are still being uploaded by various authors and tried out as an alternative to single textures, they have advantages that you have seen for yourself. Virtual tiles can be in graphics formats supported by Celestia ie png, jpg, bmp and dds. dds is the favorite because its read directly by the graphic card, (there is a thumbnail viewer available on the nvidia site) so it loads quicker, and runs more smoothly. If you can create the required files in a graphics program ,and set up the directories correctly it will work, its not a format in itself. To automate the production of tiles from a target image, which as they increase 4 fold each level, can be a considerable number, there is a script available by Dr. Fridger (toofri), which can be used in conjunction with 2 other free downloadable programs. Hope this might be of use,
cheers,
ziggy

The original documentation can be found in the thread where Chris announced the feature. See
