16k Moon - a work in progress

Post #1by praesepe » 10.08.2003, 14:55

Hi people,

Here's in what I'm working now.. a 16k map of the Moon. It's a resized version of a 21k map of the USGS that I found on the net. The texture is about 50% done (I only fixed the northern hemisphere problems), as you know, all the available maps of the moon have some nasty artifacts :(

Here are some preview shots:

Wow!

Your screenshots looks mighty fine to me, (except for a black line on the sixth picture.)

This will look very nice as my high res moon texture but I'll have to find a low-res earth to go with it!

Have you used any bumpmapping for these screenshots?

regards

Terrier,

Thanks for your comments!

Yes, there are some nasty artifacts that need to be removed, as I said, I only fixed the northern hemisphere and created a preview dds to see the results :P

No, there's no bumpmapping or specular applied on the texture on the previous screenshots (forgot to say, sorry). When the base texture is finished I'll try to create a suitable normal map/bump map for it (as you know, there's no real elevation data for the Moon yet).

wow that is looking very fine
seems Jim has some competition now.
as his updated 8k moon map is looking very nice also.

Perhaps Don, should have a go also, and make a Moon Central

Sorry I don't have any of the data to work on this.
I can't do everything! We need input and texture work from other users to keep a nice even balance. But I am not opposed to hosting other members work in the hub. As a matter of fact I have been thinking of opening the hub up to those that want to make textures of high enough resolution to cover all the planets. That way I can flesh it out more and make it a major resource for the best textures.

Don.
I am officially a retired member.
I might answer a PM or a post if its relevant to something.

Ah, never say never!!
Past texture releases, Hmm let me think about it

Thanks for your understanding.

Wow! Praesepe, this looks fantastic. I can't wait to try it out in the new version of Orbiter (which will support 16k textures) which is coming out soon.

Cheers,
Paul

Thanks!

Sure, but I never got it running on my pc (seen on the net and directly download) and never found what was going on, may be it was an earlier version..... I've heard there's a 2003 version or something like that, is it true?

What happened to the colour Praesepe?
the first shots seem to have a subtle colour to them?

Darkmiss,

You are absolutely right asking fot the colours... there aren't any. I am working with a grayscale 16k (resized down from 21k) map. On the first preview shots I colorised it before creating the dds file (just a cosmethic thing) :P I'll try to get those colours back on the next update ;)

Phew!.... thank heavens.
I thought the very subtle colouring of the first previews was great.

Another update:

Colours are back again (with a little correction on saturation levels added) and with even more artifacts removed (It's really anoying that all maps from Clementine have vertical lines from north to south, sigh).

Well, the texture is nearly finished, I'd say about 90% done (no more black squares anywhere, yes! :D) only the vertical stripes are giving me headache...

The work is temporally stopped because I'm on mini-holidays on the coast of Tarragona (my apartment is nearly oriented to the south, so O get great views of Mars... I'm sure my telescope will be busy :P ) I can't access to my home system now.. and the one I am using now hasn't the resources to tweak or manipulate any textures and has only an old TNT riva graphics card so I can't view DDS files in Celestia :(

I'll be off for about a week or so, so be patient please ;-)

Hey, great work.

I don't have to use my telescope anymore to look at the moon cuz i get same details with celestia.

If i can make a suggestion: I do think that the black lakes on your image are a bit too dark.

Is it live or is it memorex?

I think the real test is how does the simulated image compare to the actual?

Celestia is very, very good - the only place it is breaking down is the deeper shadows at the terminator. I was using the 8k moon but a crude bumpmap. I don't know if a normal map would help here.

Darkmiss,

I've just come back from my holydays so I haven't had the time to work on the 16k moon texture (since I wasn't at home at couldn't access to my home system then). I'll get back to the job as soon as possible ;)

Why you are useing still my old green Moon texture. I repent of publishing this wrong colored Moon map. Please upgrade to Moon map V2.

Forgot to ask....

Is this going to be a single 16k texture :D
or a Virtual texture, or both ?
