Artificial textures for artificial worlds

Greetings all,
I'm quite new at generating my own world textures (I got spoiled by all the goodies out on the web until now), but I have started building a few bits and bobs (namely my 40 Eri system ssc file, which I will be posting soonish. 40 Eridani is the system that is generally thought to support the planet Vulcan (and the one preferred by Gene Roddenberry as a candidate).
Anyways, just to get a feel for things, I used Fractal Terrains by Profantasy to generate maps of Vulcan and it's companion world of T'Khut.
I'd be interested to know if anyone has been using Fractal Terrains in this way, or if anyone has suggestions for other software to do the same thing.
Cheers,
