EarthNormalMap32k

I have been attempting to make a 32k earth normal map.
Here are some results...

These pics were taken with a 16k earth texture as my graphics card refused to even try and load two 32k textures at once. It only allowed one or the other.
Also i think the normal map is inverted. I used the globe data and pixels windows version of nm16 by chris. I couldnt find a way to renormalise the map after resizing either which takes away some of the detail.
There is also a big join line in the normal map which is quite unsightly.
I may fix these on a second attempt but i dont know if its worth it. it takes a good few hours to assemble.

I just thought people would like to see what the current limits on texture detail are close to considering the available data.

There are a few more pics in my account at http://www.picturetrail.com
enter dbrady in the visit album area to view my album. it will only be there till friday though.

Ps. now i just need to get my hands on the mola data!

Very, very, very beautiful indeed. I have seen the images in your page, and the 2 images of Grand Canyon are absolutely like the real thing 8O .
My compliments :D .
What is your graphic card?

Can you please show me an enlargment of Canary Islands and Maldives, here or in your page :) ?
Normally I use these views for comparison between the various textures  .
Thank you

Incredible, even your 16k texture is very high quality.
Did you make that one yourself too ?

Pictures for Andrea...

Image
The picture is 8k, 16k and 32k Moldives all made from the blue marble original Texture. There isnt a whole lot of difference between the 16 and 32k images.

Image
The Canary's.

My graphics card is a Geforce4 ti4200 64MB. I get about 25fps below about 2000km. Above this it crawls along.

Ps. Chris has been kind enough to give me a gallery. I'll fill it with pics soon.

Also does anyone think these pictures too big for posting to the forum?

I forgot to mention the dark patches around the canary's are due to the 4k spec map. It's simply too blocky.

Dbrady, first of all thank you for your images :D .
Second, I don't agree on your previous message, the one with the Maldive and Canary Islands images 8O .
In your 32k image of Tenerife and La Palma I can see the calderas in an astonishing way, very better than in my Blue Marble 16k images  .
The same for the Maldive, the definition is better, or at least this is my opinion.
Check my 16k images (no spec map), with your 32k (with spec map) 8O :

If we add that, as you say in the [quote], your 4k spec map is too blocky, I cannot imagine what will be the final result with a better spec map.
Do you think you'll apply on this problem?
By the way, I have a GeForce 4Ti 4600 with 128 MB memory, and I obtain very good results and fps at 16k.
Do you think you'll make your 32k textures available in a short time?
By and thank you again.

DBrady,
Would you like to try the specmap I use. Its an 8k that was made by a member of the forum. I am embarrassed that I can't remember who did it off the top of my head. It has many more lakes then the standard ones and I have smoothed out the edges of the coastlines for use with 16k textures. Not sure how well it will work with a 32k though. It might be worth a try. Let me know if you want it.

I might answer a PM or a post if its relevant to something.

Ah, never say never!!
Past texture releases, Hmm let me think about it

Thanks for your understanding.

Umm are you referring to the spec map which has lakes over norway and holland areas? If I'm not wrong is was the one created by Buzz.. you can find it on http://home.tiscali.nl/celestia/

Yes its Buzz's but as I said I have tweaked it to work with larger textures. If you use his as it stands the borders between water and land are very gagged. I smoothed thing out so the jaggies are gone for the most part. If you are not interested at this time it will be available as part of my 16k texture download when it is done.

Dear Dbrady:

Do you have a 16k or 8k normal map for Earth? I am lacking a good one. If so, could you post it, or tell me where to get it?

Frank,

I've already created an 8k normal map for Earth that I use on my own, I can upload it if you are interested ;)
