Yesterday i managed to make a 32k earth texture with netpbm and the bigdds tool by pixel.
First some pics...

In the final picture you can see how only a part of the texture is actually shown at any one time. The rest is blacked out. This happens on its own in celestia, nothing to do with me changing anything. Also the texture only starts to become visible below about 3000km and navigation is pretty smooth below 1500km if a bit difficult to get your bearings. Saying that it's still probably the best way i've found of viewing the blue marble texture(along with a 4k specmap and cloudmap).

pixel,
Hello, You say in the readme in your bigdds tool that you also made a texture of this size. did you have a similiar viewing experience.(Great tool by the way)
Has anyone else built a texture of this size?

Fan-tastic!!!

(Nice to see some more irish people too....)

Hope my computer can handle it when its available!!

Just wondering- are the dry valleys in antarctica visible, or are they too far south/too small?

stunning grand canyon shot...

The blackout might be due to having a 64 meg video card...but chris would know better than I...

I say we track his IP address, find out where he lives
Pay him a visit, and demad to have the texture, or attack his kneecaps

Ive seen a lot of first posts in this forum, but this is the best ive seen so far. Well done DBrady 8)

And welcome to Celestia.

Thanks Everyone.

Unfortunately the final dds file is about 350megs so making it available is not really an option at the moment as much as i like to. We havent yet got cheap broadband in ireland so i'm stuck on a 56k modem. Finding somewhere to host it would probably be a problem too at that size.

I think some people should be able to make there own 32ktexture though.
As long as you have 512megs of ram and a big virtual memory file it should be ok. I myself am using windows xp too. When i get time i'll post a how-to if anyone wants to try it.

Also the texture was made from jpegs created from the blue marble tiff's.
I'm trying to make one straight from the tiff's at the moment to see if there is any increase in clarity over the jpeg one. My first (long) attempt came out with the colours all wrong so i couldnt really tell if it was better or not.

Jack,
Dia guit!, i'm not too familiar with with the geography of antarctica and a with a quick searh on google couldnt find out where exactly the dry valleys are. If You have coordinates let me know and i'll take a screenshot for you.

Hey maybe you wouldn't mind posting it on a CD to Someone that could put it up for download.

I have 512kb internet connection.
and upload at about 300kb, it would take me a few hours to up load it.
but im sure, quite a few people on here would appreciate it.

I know that the texture can be made just like you did.
but not by all, some people here just dont have the PC spec to be able to create such a monster.

Im not sure about this, but i think it would be the first 32k texture for Celestia, that I know of :?:

PM me if you wouldnt mind posting it on a CD to me.
and ill have it up to anyone that will host it, the very same day.

Lets say someone created a 64bit and 128 bit images. What size would they be :P?

Dry valleys are located within a few km of 77.7 degs south, 162.33 degs east- they're pretty small so if you can see them it'll show just how good that 32k texture is!!

To "clarify" my post: When I said size I meant in memory means and metric size...

DBrady,
Is there any chance you could break the texture into smaller pieces and than zip them up. Then those of us with the know how can reasemble it and recreate the texture and do the procesing. I have tried I don't know how many times to download those blasted huge tiff fills just to find each and very time that the eastern half is a corupted mess. If I could download both pieces intact I would have done something like this a soon as I got the chance. I am going to give downloading the tiffs one more try. If I can't get then than I give up and will have to stick to 16k.

Yes, I was finally able to get those blasted tiff downloaded intact. So I will see what I can do with them.

Oh! great stuff.
Hoping to find a 16 and 32k texture on your Earth Cental, sometime soon. 8)

I think another thing i should mention is that internet calls over here are charged at a local call rate which is not free as in america and several other countries. This is the main reason for not wanting to upload the texture anywhere, not that it would take so long. So breaking it up is not an option either.

As for posting it out... maybe in a while when i've been here a bit longer!
But i really think somebody else will be able to make the texture soon too. It's really not that difficult.

Don,
I think you said you had problems making 16k textures. Do you want to try my devil tool. It does them with mipmaps and all in about a minute.
Incidently it took pixels tool only 24 minutes to make the 32k texture on my computer(with no mipmaps)-quite fast i thought.

Jack,
I think it may have failed your test...
Image
I think this might be them a bit blurred. I had to zoom in real close at the poles to rid of all the black patches.

Some nice pics you can get with my new texture and 4x antiailising which i just learned of in chris's post.

Borg,
As for the size of a 64k dds texture. I'd estimate about 1.4gigs. The bmp i made the 32k texture from was 1.5gigs. as for a 128k just quadruple the 64k size.

PS. these pics are hosted on a temporary picturetrail account which will expire pretty soon, at which time this thread will look pretty bare.

I could make comments about Eircom here but i'll keep them to myself...

Jack,

Nah its ok they're pretty small i wasn't too hopeful anyway...

I can see dunes in the first ISS pic!!

That antialiasing looks fantastic... i'm gonna seriously upgrade my pc soon so i too can boast about this kinda thing!

DBrady,
I would be willing to give your Devil tool a try. As long as its not to complex to use. I can handle some Windows XP command line stuff but I have been in true GUI land for so long I can't believe how much of the old Dos commands I have forgotten. I have yet to try pixels dds tool but I do have it. Somewhere. As I said I did manage to finaly get both of the tiffs intact this time. I have already resized them in Photoshop but I don't have enough system ram to stitch it together. I have 1.5Gigs of Ram but that still is not enough. I can't use GIMP either. So if anyone knows a tool I can use to stitch the two halves together that would help. Now what I am starting to think is that I won't, or anyone else for that matter but Chris will have enough memory on our cards to even load this beast. I want to include all the mipmaps so I am sure we are looking at a monster texture that only 256Meg video cards can handle. I am starting to think maybe I should stick to a 16k projecct instead. But I would love to be able to give everyone the chance to see and try to use a 32k texture.

Don.
