Add Yet Another Mars To The Mix

Post #1by Don. Edwards » 12.05.2003, 09:30

Well I have worked this till I can't see straight anymore and I am starting to get just a little Mars'ed out. So this is where I am now. I have a very color corrected Mars texture more in the direction of Fridger’s but not as quite like his, an update to the one I released a few days ago, and need to know if any of you even want the thing. I need to get back to work on my main projects and finish up a few loose ends and then get all the stuff sent to Frank. So take a look at the pictures and let me know if I should go ahead and upload this or go on to other things. The choice is yours. Here are three screen caps of the texture.

I would of course make the modified cloud texture available as well. It is a blend Jim's and John Van Vliet's clouds with a few additions. I put light clouds in the canyons of Vales Marineris and over the Hellas basin.
So let me know.

I'd certainly want to download this if you're making it available, Don.

They will be up in a day or so. I am making a new webpage for them. Wish me luck. HTML and me don't mix well. 8O

Ok,
My site is up and this is where you can get the textures. Its really just a front end to my storage area but I think its better than just looking at hyperlinks. So you can get the updated textures at http://63.224.48.65/~impulse/Mars_Centr ... ntral.html

I hope everyone likes the site. All comments are welcome of course.
Enjoy!

Congratulations for your new Mars Central! And for your oustanding texture. I've just downloaded and tested it and set it as my default Celestia Mars texture :P

P.S. How amount of bumpmapping do you use in solarsys.ssc for Mars?

Don even your web site looks great
you should make a page the same as this for each planet you make
and link them all together

looks really good

Don,

A couple of quibbles:

Your web page says "760 megabits" is there any chance you actually meant "760 MegaBytes"? It's unusual for people to describe filesizes in bits.

It'd be nice if the page included the actual sizes of the files so that one can decide if it's worth the wait before starting the download.

Hey Don, very, very nice indeed.

And now I would like to know if there will be any chance to have them in 16K format.
This because I have seen that the actually available two 16k Mars textures are both incompatible with the actual bumpmaps (they have different central meridian).
I think it would be truly amazing to have the possibility to see Mars with such a resolution and with the wonderful colours you put in.
Anyhow, thank you for your 8k, I love it.
Waiting for your next exploit.

It is well worth the wait
Thanks once again for a top class texture Don

Selden,
I will add the file sizes to the descriptions. Sorry about that it was getting late and I was getting tired. Believe it or not the misspelling of "760 Megabytes" was the spell checker programs doing and I forgot to go back and fix it. Look for updated info in a few hours.

ANDREA,
Unfortunately there are not any shadowless 16k textures available as yet. I have spoken to the texture artist at Space-Graphics about larger textures. He has them and they are almost ready for release but he is going to charge a nominal fee for the larger textures from now on. So it looks like for now 8k is the best I can do. I have downloaded the old Mars 16k texture from the ftp.dasmirnov server but I have yet to extract the image and start to play with it. But even if I do I still can't recompress it back to .dds because as of yet I have NO luck making 16k textures of any kind.
This little trick still eludes me.

I am glad everyone likes what I did so far. I plan on branching this out into sister pages for my Earth texture and one for my update to the semi fictional HD28185 planetary system and any other planets I tackle in our solar system.
This is not really about Mars but I have found a nice animation that shows the snow coverage for the northern hemisphere so I will start to work on the seasonal earth textures as soon as all the Mars stuff is done.
