Been learning how to do these in blender too. But, I like to do some extra work and go into sculpt mode and alter my mountain ranges. Then I take it to Wilbur and GIMP for heightfields and coloring.

I do have a question, how do you make yours seamless? Thanks!

I make them seamless in blender
here is a blend file for the above planet and heightmap ( it makes both )

the blend file IS NOT!!! documented so you will need to try to fallow my logic in the node set up

if you hit the " 0" on the num pad you see the sphere

i export the heightmap as 32 bit exr format image , use nip to extract just a single band ( and normalize and adjust the gama )
save as a tiff , use gdal_translate to convert it to a bt format ( 32 bit float) , import it into wilbur for some erosion

BUT i remap the poles to stereopolar projection first then erode them in wilbur
wilbur WILL NOT erode a simple cylindrical map correctly

this is a fair amount of work but worth it
and it only takes about 15 / 20 min. of my time

Not too far off from what I had guessed. I figured GIMP would come to the party at some point. I had started documenting the process partly so that I had reference to go back to. So far I have several different ways of making Earthlike planets...I'm a hoarder of knowledge!

I am probably slower in the process than you, mainly because I get hung up on the correct placement of biomes and whatnot. I'll have to post my one sample of your method in another thread. Currently having issues uploading individual files....
