Well this was something I mensioned I was considering doing for Earth as well as GreenMars. I decided to do Earth first. :)
So here are 2 pictures. The first is North America in Summer mode.

The second is North America in Winter Mode.

Of course this is a very early atemp and it looks more like Earth in the early stages of an Ice Age but I have to do some fine tunning yet. I just wanted to show that the idea isn't dead by a long shot. I think with more tweaking I am headed in the right direction. All coments welcome.

Here is something else I noticed after adding the snow to the mountains.
Even with an 8k texture you can know easily make out the big volcanoes here in the Pacific North West. This isn't all then by a long shot. Just thoughs over 10,000 ft and the more famous ones. Just imagine how nice this would look at 16k or dare I say 32k. In my dreams.

Ok,
I think am even closer this time. I not only created snow on the mountains and higher elevatins but I also did some recoloring of the vegitation to show seasonal change. You will see in the shots there is alot less green and quite a bit more golds, browns, and reds added. So on to the pictures. This first on is over North Ameria.

The second is over Asia.

And last but not leased we have Europe.

This whole thing was not easy to say the least. And of course it is far from perfect or totaly acurate. Actualy from the pictures I have seen at the NASA site there should be a great deal of gray covering the ground across North America and Europe. I did try to replicate this but I just wasn't happy with the results. It ended up looking more like fog covering everything and it made a brightness and contrast change to the whole northern hemisphere undoing all my color changes. Doing Southern Winter is going to be a breeze simply because there just isn't as much land mass in the southern hemisphere. So all I will have to worry about is getting South America right and getting some snow on the higher peaks in Austrailia, Tazmainia, New Zealand and just a few other places. I should be ready to post them in a few days.
