Improved 14k Triton Texture

I have recolorized the 14k Triton texture from the 3d asteroid catalogue to match more with the true color pictures taken by Voyager 2:

I also filled in the blank space with fictional data by copying the texture over the space, but there is a problem. The separation between the two areas looks unnaturally sharp:

I need to find out how to fix this while leaving all the real data the way it should be. Any ideas?

The coloring looks quite good actually. I wonder how Triton looks in natural colors in the first place, Voyager's camera didn't have the right color filters to easily compose true color images.

I left the unimages areas blanc and tried to make a smooth transition. If you want to fill fictional details, you should use a transition with transparency. I am using Gimp, here is what I usually do:
Let's say you have a layer with the blanc areas cut out. Deselect every color channel except for transpareny, then use gaussian blurr with a high radius (will eat a lot of processing power!), then use the alpha channel in the histogram and cut out the lower half of transparency values.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears the instructions you have given me are meant to be used on only one half of the texture, not the whole two-sided texture that I have.

Yes you start with half the texture and once you have a transparency gradient you can fill in the other half.

i normally just use a software inpaint tool
remap to the northpole - inpaint - remap back

Ok, I succeeded with adding transparency to the no data regions and using the gaussian blur, but I don't understand your instructions that come afterwards. I don't know what "histogram" you are talking about, and I don't know what to do exactly with the histogram or how to do it. If you could supply more detailed instructions with how to do this, it would be most appreciated.

I have succeeded in creating a version of the 14k Triton texture map with the empty areas filled in, using copy and paste and a little bit of the resynthesizer.

I hope to do a Voyager colors version sometime soon.
