Heres some newer updated star textures for Celestia...These are currently 2048 x 1024 and in jpg format...You can unzip them to the Celestia/textures/medres directory or your desktop...

One problem Rassilon: The A star texture looks exactly like the G star texture.

But what I meant was astar.jpg and gstar.jpg are both yellow! They are exactly alike!

Shouldnt be EXACTLY...one will be less yellow...You will notice that the F class uses the same texture and is a bit yellowish...otherwise I would have made astar a bit more bluish than yellow......Its ok Im redoing these anyways...Didnt quite turn out the way I wanted...

Yeah at least add some sunspots somewhere else, that will make a difference.

Brain-Dead again...
Sorry to be a bother, but how exactly does one use these new star
textures? Have placed them in textures\medres, but I also have to
change something else. Don't I?
Thanks, Bob

They will replace the current ones included with Celestia. If they do not show up make sure they are named:
astar.jpg
bstar.jpg
gstar.jpg
mstar.jpg
Not sure on how to use them in stc files yet....I havent even begun to mod Celestia 1.4.0...

Very good,Rassilon.
It seems that you introduzed faculae to stars textures in Celestia.
I think the shade of yellow of an A and G texture is differnte. This could easily changed in Photoshop or similar programs. But I would like to know where I could find real information about star color.
But in general,I would sugest a yellow-white color to A stars. What do you think?

Thanks Rassilon...
Have made certain that the textures are named/placed correctly, but
can still see no change when using 1.4.0 Pre6. <shrug>
Perhaps I can play with textures in an STC file?
Thanks, Bob

Bob and Ras',
Apparently Chris has decided not to use the different *star.jpg images as surfaces for the different classes of stars in v1.4.0. I think only astar.jpg is being used in pre6, for example. I don't think he's quite finaiized what actually will be done, though.
However, the new .STC format does allow a Texture declaration to specify a star's surface texture image.
An overly brief summary of the new STC parameters can be found at
http://www.lns.cornell.edu/~seb/celestia/stc-file-parameters.html

As always, Selden, thanks very much for the information. I'll see what I
can do with a "Texture" declaration.
Take care, Bob

If Chris has decided to do away with using different colors for spectral classes of stars in 1.4.0, that would be a major bummer! When I go to a blue-white supergiant, I expect it to be blue-white, not a "G" class yellow star in appearance. Spectral M stars should not be white or yellow, they should be reddish.
Perhaps I misunderstood. IN that case,
sorry! But if I did not misunderstand, Chris ... PLEASE ... do not do away with spectral colors for stars. In fact, we are now approaching 10 spectral classes for stars and we should have more spectral texture options in Celestia, not less. Nor in my humble opinion should users have to edit any files or play programmer with stc files, to get stars to be the correct color in the sky.

Frank,
The plan is to do away with different colored default surface texture images, not to do away with different colorations for different spectral types.
If you use v1.4.0pre6 to compare Mira with Algol, for example, you'll see that M5 Mira is quite red, while B0 Algol is blue. My impression is that Chris may have some other plans for this which he hasn't revealed yet.
