Earth Does Not Look Right w/High-Res (8K) Textures

I downloaded and installed 5 8K Earth textures from the Celestia Motherlode site all created by Don Edwards. The ones I downloaded are:

  • Don's Realistic Earth - 8K
  • Don's Earth Specular Map - 8K
  • Don's Earth Cloud Map - 8k
  • Don's Earth Cloud Shadow Map - 8K
  • Don's Earth Night Map & Aurora - 8K

I have an ATI Radeon Xpress 1250 integrated into my motherboard and 2GB of RAM, however, Earth does not look right with these new high-res textures. Below is a sample image of what Earth now looks like. Has anyone else had this problem before and if so, how do I fix it? I am running Windows Vista Home Premium. :wink:

Edit your solarsystem.ssc and set Earth's clouds to "00" cloudspeed. You can't have 8k and them rotating at the same time. Its a limitation of Celestia.

with built in chipsets running all of those 8k maps at the same time assuming that the chipset can handle it will in all likely hood drop your frames/second to 10 frame pre min. (1 frame /6 sec.)
with built-in chips i would stick with 1k, 2k and 4k maps
or virtual textures
it would be interesting to see the out put of glxinfo on this machine

4k Textures?

I find the same problem with the 4k cloud textures.

Why is it that you can't have moving clouds with any more than a 2k cloud map? I wonder if there's some way to work around it.

as to 2k and 4k clouds it depends on your graphics card, most older ones will only handle a 2k partly transparent image that is moving on the 3d object. And a built in chip set might only handle a 512 px or 1k image . The newer hi-end ( maybe?) will be able to use a 4k map
for example:
My antique nvidia Gforce2 mx 400 can have a 2k moving cloud map but a 4k non-moving map .
